KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Despite 70 all-time meetings being split right down the middle between Truman and Missouri-St. Louis, the Tritons had gotten the better of the Bulldogs in nine of the two teams' last 10 meetings. Fast forward to Saturday and Truman reversed that trend to sweep UMSL for the first time since 2011 thanks to a pair of one-run affairs, 2-1 and 3-2.
With that much-needed sweep, its first of the conference season, Truman improved to 19-10 overall and 7-9 in GLVC play. On the other side, UMSL lost both ends of a doubleheader for the third time this season and second time within the league to fall to 21-17 on the season, including 10-6 in the conference. Next up, the Bulldogs will take a break from GLVC play to host Lincoln for a doubleheader on Tuesday beginning at 2 p.m. for Military Appreciation Day.
In game one,
Alyssa Hajduk (8-3) went the distance for the fifth time this season and 16th time in her career after tossing seven innings of one-run ball. Hajduk gave up just four hits in those seven frames with five walks and three strikeouts. The junior hurler has now surrendered two earned runs or fewer in each of her last eight outings to drop her ERA to 2.42 and opposing batting average to just .187, which is good for third in the GLVC.
After Hajduk walked in UMSL's only run in the top of the first, she settled down before Truman notched both of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. That inning,
Brooke VunCannon (pictured) singled in
Alyssa Rivera before
Adrienne Compton scored on an error by the third baseman later in the inning.
In the nightcap, Truman was the first to score as
Emma Walbert singled in Reisinger in the third and Rivera was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded two innings later. However, with
Lauren Dale's two runners on in the top of the seventh and one out recorded, Hajduk entered the game and gave up a two-run single down the left field line that tied it and blew her save opportunity. Hajduk then got the next batter to strike out keeping the game tied heading to the bottom of the seventh.
There, after Reisinger popped out to the shortstop to lead it off, Walbert reached on an error by the first baseman after she dropped a glove flip from the second baseman. Rivera followed that with a single before Compton reached on a fielder's choice to the third baseman because she couldn't beat Walbert to the bag at third. Next up, VunCannon hit a hot shot to a diving shortstop and Walbert scored to walk it off for the Bulldogs.
Dale was given the no decision after she allowed two unearned runs on four hits in six and a third innings with one free pass and a punchout. Hajduk (9-3) picked up the two-out win, both of which came on strikeouts.
