EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Despite another 20 point night from Brodric Thomas, it was not enough for the Truman Men's Basketball team as they fell 79-76 at Southern Indiana. With this defeat, the Bulldogs drop to 11-6 (7-2 GLVC) on the season.
USI led wire to wire, but the game was close throughout. Early in the first half USI led by as many as nine, but in the middle of the frame TSU cut the lead to one at 20-19 after a 6-0 run. A layup from Turner Scott would even the game at 23 with 6:47 remaining in the half, but from there USI went on a 4-0 run to retake the lead and every time the Bulldogs would cut the lead to one possession the Screaming Eagles would answer. Ultimately, the hosts would go into the locker room with a four point edge at 36-32.
Truman began the second half with a three point play from Hunter Strait, which cut the lead to one at 36-35. USI answered with an 8-0 run that took the lead back up to nine at 44-35. Later on, while trailing 48-42, the Bulldogs got back to back threes from Thomas and Sam Nissen to knot it up with 13:27 to go. USI would take back the lead, but a 5-0 run from the Bulldogs down 61-56 knotted the game up with 7:38 to go. Turner Scott made two from the line and Thomas drained another three, one of his team high three treys. In the final minute, the Bulldogs looked poised to steal a victory after a made three from Scott with 51 seconds to go. Thomas drained his final three with 13 seconds left to make it a two point game at 78-76, but USI made 1-2 from the line on the back end and preserved the three point win.
USI made only 1-8 three pointers, but the Screaming Eagles made 32 free throws to just 16 for the Bulldogs. Thomas led the team with 20 points and tied with Alex McQuinn for the team high in boards with nine. Scott added 16 points and led the team with five assists.
The Bulldogs look to get back in the win column Saturday as they take on McKendree in Lebanon, Ill. with a 3 p.m. tip off.
