KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman State Men's Basketball team got its first home win of the season against Quincy on the 20th, extending their winning streak to 11 games. It was supposed to be the final game of the 2020 calendar year, but with rescheduling due to an outbreak of cases within the Maryville program; New Year's Eve will have the final act of 2020 for the Bulldogs.
The home opener against Quincy was a back and forth game, with Truman coming out on top 96-91. Cade McKnight led the Bulldogs with 25 points while Dylan Peeters notched another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Masen Miller drained four more threes to continue leading the GLVC with 4.2 treys per game. With 21 made threes on the season, Miller leads the nation. His 4.2 per game made is sixth nationally.
At 19.4 points per game, McKnight sits seventh in the GLVC in scoring average. While Turner Scott leads active players in scoring with 832 points, McKnight is only five points back with 827. Both McKnight and Scott have 43 career double digit scoring games, and McKnight has 11 games of 20+ points.Â
Dylan Peeters is second in the conference in rebounds per game with 11.4, trailing only Josh Price of Southern Indiana. He sits in a three way tie for first nationally with four double-doubles: alongside Jared Vitztum of Fort Hays St. and Sai Witt from Lincoln (Mo.). Both players have played six games to Peeters' five.Â
Scott is averaging a career high 12 points per game, and at 832 career points needs just 168 more to reach 1,000. He currently is second in the GLVC in assists with 6.2 per game, and needs 24 more to reach fifth in program history.
Elijah Hazekamp has shown his range from outside the arc so far this season as he is tied for third on the team with six three point buckets. He scored a dozen in each of the first two games and he remains second on the team with 6.5 rebounds a game.
As a team, Truman third in scoring offense at 81 points per game and second in scoring defense at 70.4 points against.
Saints Scouting Report
The Saints are in a new era under new coach Jesse Shaw. The former UMSL assistant came over to Maryville over the summer and has two victories in his first four games leading the team. The team defeated Missouri S&T in his first game 76-67 and later downed Illinois-Springfield 61-60.Â
Owen Long leads the team in points, averaging 20.3 per game. Daniel Farris leads the team with 5.5 assists per game and is second in rebounds with 5.5--behind Eze Kamto who grabbed ten rebounds on the opener but has not played since.
Maryville was ranked fifth in the GLVC Central preseason poll, with 20 points.
Series History
Truman has a decisive edge in the series against MU, winning ten of the 13 total meetings between the two schools. The Bulldogs have a two game winning streak in the series, dominating both games last season.
Coming Up
The Bulldogs will ring in the new year at Pershing Arena January 3rd as they welcome Southern Indiana, tip off will be around 3:15; following the conclusion of the women's game.
