KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman State Men's Basketball team opens 2021 looking to get back on track after having its 11 game winning streak snapped on New Year's Eve at Maryville. The hot shooting Saints took down the Bulldogs 90-83. Now with a compressed schedule, Truman is back at home looking to bounce back against Southern Indiana.
Maryville lit it up from beyond the arc as they made 14-25 three pointers. Owen Long scored 30 to lead all scorers while Ari Jackson added 21. Elijah Hazekamp led the Bulldogs with 19 points after missing the Quincy game. Cade McKnight and Turner Scott each had 17 and Dylan Peeters had 14 points and 11 boards, racking up his fifth double double of the season.
At 19.0 points per game, McKnight sits seventh in the GLVC in scoring average. While Turner Scott leads active players in scoring with 849 points, McKnight is only five points back with 844. Both McKnight and Scott have 44 career double digit scoring games, and McKnight has 11 games of 20+ points.Â
Dylan Peeters is second in the conference in rebounds per game with 11.3, trailing only Josh Price of Southern Indiana. With his fifth double-double, he leads the nation with five on the season. He had played one fewer game than Sai Witt of Lincoln and Jared Vitztum of Fort Hays State, but now all three have played six games and Peeters has taken the lead.
Scott is averaging a career high 12.8 points per game, and needs just 151 more to reach 1,000. He currently is third in the GLVC in assists with 6.0 per game, and needs 18 more to reach fifth in program history. With 15 three pointers, he is second on the team trailing only Masen Miller's 21.
Elijah Hazekamp has shown his range from outside the arc so far this season as he is tied for third on the team with nine three point buckets. He scored a dozen in each of the first two games and he remains second on the team with 6.2 rebounds a game.
As a team, Truman third in scoring offense at 81.3 points per game and fifth in scoring defense at 73.7 points against.
