Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Bulldogs Suffer First Loss of the Season at Bearcats

MARYVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Basketball team entered today's game second in the country in the NABC poll released earlier in the day, but suffered their first loss of the season Tuesday night as they fell to the third ranked Northwest Missouri State Bearcats 86-76. Overall it was a well played game from both teams as both shot the ball well but ultimately Truman miscues got the better of them in the end. Truman shot over 55% from the floor and over 42% from downtown, but ultimately turnovers and seven more free throws for NWMSU made the difference. NWMSU forced 14 Bulldog turnovers and turned them into 19 points, a +11 margin in points.

Elijah Hazekamp got Truman on the board first with a three pointer to make it a 3-2 ball game, and then Dylan Peeters got the next two buckets for the Bulldogs to make it a 7-7 game. NWMSU kept the Bulldogs at arm's length most of the first half, but finally with 6:10 remaining in the half Keaton Mitchell hit a three pointer to tie the game at 27. He tied for the lead in points in the first half with Cade McKnight. At 4:13 Sam Nissen hit a three pointer make it 35-34, the first Bulldog lead since 5-4 very early in the half. Trey Shearer made it 37-34 but from there NWMSU scored seven straight and went in to the locker room up four at 43-39.

Just like the first half, a Hazekamp triple was the first points on the board for Truman and made it a one point game. Unfortunately Truman would not draw any closer the rest of the half as they couldn't find the rhythm against the Bearcats defense. The Bulldogs pulled within one at 50-49 following a layup from McKnight but from there every run Truman would make would be immediately answered the rest of the game.

McKnight led Truman with 25 points and seven rebounds. Mitchell scored all ten of his points in the first half, also joined in double figures with ten by Peeters. Peeters also led the team with five assists and three blocked shots.

Truman will be back in action after the holiday as they take on Upper Iowa in the Hawkeye State Saturday afternoon at 2:00.
