KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The sixth ranked Truman Men's Basketball team survived a scare in Illinois' capital on Thursday night with a 72-63 overtime win over Illinois Springfield. Cade McKnight led the way with 25 points for the Bulldogs, while Elijah Hazekamp got his second double-double of the year with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
After UIS grabbed the first bucket, Truman went on a 10-0 run, started with a three pointer from Hazekamp. McKnight scored five of those points, including capping the run with a three point play at the 15:17 mark. Truman would not get back on the board until the 11:21 mark when Dylan Peeters hit a jumper to make the Truman lead 12-6. With 6:29 to go, Truman stretched their lead to 21-13 with four free throws in a row from McKnight and Peeters. During the half, each time UIS would make a push Truman would answer and ultimately took a 31-27 lead into half.Â
Turner Scott scored the first five points of the second half, with a jumper and then a three pointer. At the 17:11 mark, Peeters hit a free throw to make it 39-30, but the Bulldogs would go on a drought for the next four plus minutes as UIS closed to within four at 39-35. Peeters hit a foul shot to snap the drought at 12:52. As the half wore on, the hosts would make their push.
At 6:49, the Bulldogs trailed 46-45; first time being down since 2-0. The teams went back and forth for the rest of regulation giving and taking the lead. With one second left on the clock and the game tied at 57, UIS was at the line with the chance to go ahead but could not convert on two shots and the game went to overtime.
Peeters got the first bucket of overtime to put Truman ahead 59-57, but UIS answered with a three on the other end. McKnight made two foul shots to put Truman back up 61-60, and a three from Hazekamp and jumpers from Peeters and Scott was the spurt that all but sealed the game for Truman.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Quincy. Tip off will be at 3:15 p.m.
