KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The sixth ranked Truman Men's Basketball team won their tenth straight game Monday as they defeated Southern Indiana 75-72 in a back and forth game that came down to the last shot. Cade McKnight led the way with 21 points, and now sits at 992 points for his career. With 11 rebounds, he recorded his second double-double of the season. Turner Scott scored a season high 19, including four three pointers.
USI grabbed the first four points of the game, but Truman went on a 9-2 run over the next five minutes to grab a 9-6 lead. Dylan Peeters scored five of those points, capped off by a dunk from Alex McQuinn. With 10:17 left in the half, USI had taken a 16-11 lead, but McKnight came back with a layup and then Sam Nissen hit a jumper to pull Truman back within one. McQuinn hit two foul shots to give Truman the lead again and then Hunter Strait capped an 8-0 run for the Bulldogs. With 2:30 to go, Truman had their largest lead of the half at 30-24, but USI would close the gap prior to intermission and end the first half 20-28.
McKnight scored the first six points of the second half, extending the Bulldogs lead to eight points at 36-28. However, USI reeled off the next 11 points to take back the lead at 39-36 with 15:25 to go. However, it did not take long for Truman to jump back ahead, as Scott drained a three at 14:41 to go up 40-39. Jelani Simmons answered with a three at the other end, and it would set up a supremely entertaining second half.Â
McKnight hit a jumper to knot the game back up at 42, and then four straight from Elijah Hazekamp put Truman back in the lead and then Scott drained another trey to cap a 9-0 run. Tyler Henry answered on the other end from downtown, and USI clawed back and would eventually tie the game at 54 with 8:53 to go. With 7:30 to go, Josh Price hit two foul shots to give USI a 58-56 lead, answered on the other end by Sam Nissen, who scored two of his career high eight points to knot the game back up.
A three point play from Mateo Rivera was answered by a three pointer from Masen Miller, and then a three point shot from Rivera was answered by Nissen as the game remained tied at 64 with 5:46 to go. The two teams went back and forth and with 1:51 to go were knotted up at 72. With 1:06 to go Scott hit the final field goal of the game and in the closing seconds Nissen hit one of two foul shots to push the lead to three. A last second half court effort would not go for USI as the Bulldogs persevered.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this coming Saturday as they take on William Jewell on the road. Tip off will be at 3 p.m.
