KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman State Men's Basketball team moved up to #5 in the NABC poll this week, and will be back on the road against William Jewell Saturday. The Bulldogs have now won ten straight after going 3-0 on their road trip through Illinois and Indiana--downing Illinois Springfield, Quincy and Southern Indiana in three very close games.
The Bulldogs are going up against William Jewell for the second time this season--the first meeting a tense 82-77 win for the Bulldogs. In that game Alex McQuinn set a new career high with 15 points, which tied with Cade McKnight and Turner Scott for the most points in the game for Truman. Scott also led the way with seven assists and tied with Elijah Hazekamp for the lead in rebounds with four.
With 50 seconds to go in the game, Truman held a narrow 77-75 lead. Scott hit a free throw to make it a three point game, then Hunter Strait pushed the lead to five. After two fouls shots WJC got back to within three, but Scott hit two more foul shots to preserve the win.Â
At 17.5 points per game, McKnight is eighth in the GLVC in scoring average. He has broken the 20 point barrier four times this season, as he eclipsed 20 points twice on the three game road trip. His season high is 26 against UMSL (one shy of his career high). At 992 career points, he is just 8 shy of joining the thousand point club.
Peeters is second in the GLVC with 9.2 rebounds per game. He's also second on the team with 13.1 points per game and leads with 13 blocks. His double-double count is at seven, tied for fourth best in the nation with Cam Martin of Missouri Southern and Will Eames of Missouri Western.
Scott is averaging a career high 11.1 points per game, and needs just 50 more to reach 1,000 career points. He is first in the GLVC with 5.7 assists per game by a wide margin (and top 20 in the country)--second place is Conley Garrison at 5.1. He is also one steal away from 100 for his career. With 29 three pointers, he is third on the team--behind Masen Miller with 37 and Hazekamp with 33. Hazekamp had his second double-double as a Bulldog against Illinois Springfield as he set a career high in rebounds with 18 and scored 13 points.
As a team, Truman is second in the GLVC in scoring with 78.6 points per game and first in scoring defense at 67.5 points allowed per game. The Bulldogs have a scoring differential of +11.1, well ahead of second place Southwest Baptist's +8.7. The Bulldogs also rank first in three point percentage at 40.5%, and third in field goal defense at 42.3%.
Cardinals Scouting Report
Eysan Wiley leads the team in both points per game at 17.4 and rebounds with 7.2. Mason Alexander leads with 52 assists, 36 threes made and 17 steals. The team enters the week on a winning streak after defeating Illinois Springfield Saturday. The Cardinals will host Quincy on Thursday before the Bulldogs on Saturday.
Series History
The Bulldogs have played William Jewell 22 times, winning 18 of them; including 13 straight. Every meeting as members of the GLVC (since 2014) has gone to the Bulldogs. The last loss for Truman in the series was in 1971.
Coming Up
The Bulldogs will enter the final weekend of the season against Rockhurst and Southwest Baptist after this Saturday's game. Tip off for the Thursday night contest with Rockhurst is at 7:30 p.m. and with SBU at 3 on Saturday afternoon.
