KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The seventh ranked Truman Men's Basketball team picked up its seventh straight win on Saturday as they defeated Lewis University 73-66. Elijah Hazekamp followed up his big game against UIndy on Thursday by reaching double figures again with 11, while Cade McKnight led the way with 18 points for the Bulldogs. Dylan Peeters led with six boards and scored 14 points and Hunter Strait had a big game off the bench with 15 points.
Lewis jumped out to an early lead to start the game, but the Bulldogs finally drew even at 10-10 with 12:43 to go in the half. At the 9:28 mark, Peeters made a layup to give Truman their first lead. Peeters made two more from the foul line and then Hazekamp hit a three pointer to cap a 9-0 run for the Bulldogs and make it 17-10. Lewis had drawn back within two at 23-21 when Keaton Mitchell threw down an emphatic dunk to keep Truman ahead and ultimately Peeters finished the first half with a layup to send Truman into the intermission up 31-26.
In the second half, Lewis would not go away quietly. Up 40-38, Hazekamp and McKnight hit back to back three pointers to make it an eight point margin for the Bulldogs. Strait extended the lead into double digits with a jumper to make it 48-38 at 12:27. With 3:32 to go, Truman took their biggest lead at 14 points at 61-47. With 1:31 to go, that 14 point margin had been cut in half to 63-56, and Peeters all but sealed the game with an interception midcourt and breakaway dunk. Truman saw out the rest of the game to seal the seven point win.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on the 11th as they go on the road to take on Illinois Springfield. Tip off will be at 7:00 p.m.
