KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Men's Soccer team is looking to get back on track after suffering a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Maryville last Sunday. The Bulldogs opened their season with a win at home over Missouri S&T after Sam Newton scored his first career goal in his first career game with a free kick from 30 yards out. This weekend the take on Lindenwood on Friday at 2:30 and then Missouri-St. Louis Sunday at the same time.
Last time the Bulldogs met the Lions the Bulldogs pulled out a 3-1 win as Matt Yankowitz scored in the first half on a penalty shot, and Jeff Masters scored to make it 2-1 and then a Lions own goal made it 3-1. Last year the Bulldogs snapped a two game losing streak to the Tritons last season as they downed the Tritons off a goal in the 16th minute from Will Clayton. Julian Echeverri made eight saves to keep UMSL off the board. The last four games between the Bulldogs and the Tritons have been decided by one goal, with each team taking two of them.
So far this season Joey Keane has allowed just one goal on 11 shots faced. His save percentage is .909. Newton leads the team in shots on goal with two of the four--the other two belonging to Andy Brennan and Ian McCluskey.
Through two games, the Lions have yet to get on the board and have been outshot 34-12. Four of the Lions shots have been on goal, compared to 16 of their opponent's shots. The Lions opened the season falling 1-0 to Illinois Springfield and then fell 2-0 to Quincy.
The Tritons downed Lewis 1-0 in the season opener and then tied with UIS 0-0 in the second game of the season. Leo Sowa has the only goal of the season for the Tritons. Anton Mukhin has gone 200 minutes in net without allowing a goal, and his shutout streak earned him Defensive Player of the Week honors from the GLVC. He made seven saves against UIS, and four of them came in overtime.
Following these games, the Bulldogs will hit the road for games at McKendree and Southern Indiana on the 12th and 14th.
