LIBERTY, Mo.--The Truman Volleyball team continued its momentum from Sunday's upset over #16 Drury into this Saturday as they downed #25 Indianapolis and host school William Jewell on Saturday. The team has now defeated three ranked opponents in its first six wins. The Bulldogs downed the Greyhounds 3-1 (30-28, 26-24, 21-25, 25-16) and the Cardinals 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18). In an efficient attack day for the Bulldogs, they hit .218 against the Greyhounds and .234 against the Cardinals.
Game One
The Bulldogs racked up a season high 68 kills in the win over the Greyhounds. Four Bulldogs had kills in double digits, led by Sam Yancy with 16. Ellie Kaat had 14; while Morgan Smith and Emma Berthold each recorded 12.
The first set was a tremendous, back and forth affair with many swings of momentum. But it would be the Greyhounds who got the first chance to end the set as they took a 24-23 lead. But Kaat recorded a kill to even the set at 24. Truman had setpoint at 25-24, but UIndy fought it off. The teams went back and forth until tied at 28. Kills from Emma Wollert and Yancy sealed the set for the Bulldogs.
The second set looked much like the first with each team going on small runs of three or so points to take the lead and then the other would tie it up. Once again, the teams were tied at 23. Kaat gave the Bulldogs set point, but once again UIndy fought it off for the deuce. Two straight errors from the Greyhounds gave the Bulldogs the set.
In the third set, UIndy scored seven straight to take a 10-3 lead. Truman got within two at 22-20 but could not take the lead as the Greyhounds took the set.
Truman jumped on the Greyhounds early in the fourth set 10-5. They held off a few runs from the Greyhounds to take the set going away by nine points.
Lindsay Woltering set a new career high with 31 digs in the match, and Rachel DeFries led with 27 assists.
Game Two
The Bulldogs held off the Cardinals in the second game, committing just ten errors to 27 for the Cardinals. Smith led with ten kills, while Katy Motz led with 20 assists.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first set behind a kill from Kaat and three consecutive Cardinal errors. WJC would not catch back up the rest of the set and Truman took an early 1-0 lead.
WJC jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the second set, but Truman went on a 5-0 run that included two kills from Smith to take a 7-4 lead. The teams would seesaw back and forth as eventually WJC took a 16-13 lead, and pronto Truman reeled off four straight to take a one point lead. It was 23-22 in the waning part of the set when kills from Smith and Kaat ended it for the Bulldogs.
In the third set, Truman jumped out to a 5-0 lead and would not look back. WJC rallied to get within 7-5, but another 4-0 stretch from the Bulldogs all but ended the set.
