QUINCY, Ill.--The Truman Volleyball team took on Quincy on Saturday afternoon, and for the third time this season fell to the Hawks 3-1. This time, the Hawks took the first two sets 25-18 and 25-16, the Bulldogs won the third set 25-20, then Quincy took the fourth set 25-21. Morgan Smith led Truman with ten kills, Katy Motz led with 17 assists and Rachel DeFries led with 16 digs and Ainsley Heise totaled eight blocks.
In the first set, Truman opened on a 4-0 run, with DeFries getting the first kill of the game. Eventually Quincy would tie it up at nine, but Truman came back with the next two to take the lead. Down 14-13 later in the set, the Bulldogs took back the lead with a kill from Motz and then a block by Sam Yancy. But Quincy reeled off the next six and saw out the set to go up 1-0.
In a flipping of the script from the first set, the Bulldogs found themselves down 6-1 opening the second set. A quick 3-0 spurt with kills from Heise and Yancy got the Bulldogs back in it, but they were unable to bring the set any closer than two the rest of the way as the Hawks went up 2-0.
The third set was tit for tat to begin, with the set tied at two, four, eight and nine. The teams seesawed for the next 11 points, putting Truman up 15-14. Later on the Bulldogs were up 19-18 and a block from Ellie Kaat and Kate Benzing started a 4-0 run that put the set away for Truman. Benzing and Berthold picked up a combined block and Motz picked up an ace. Yancy picked up two more kills and a Benzing kill ended the set.
Quincy held an 11-6 lead in the third set, but Truman went on a 4-0 run to bring it back within one. The run included kills from Kaat, Heise and Smith. But Quincy fended off the Bulldogs twice as Truman pulled within one point, and the Bulldogs would not get any closer the rest of the set as the Hawks won the set and the match.
Truman will be back in action on Wednesday as they visit Missouri-St. Louis in a reverse fixture of this past Wednesday's match.
