RECAP: Bulldogs Suffer Second Midweek Sweep to Tritons

ST. LOUIS--The Truman Volleyball team played their final road match of the season Wednesday evening as they took on #8 Missouri-St. Louis. Like the match last Wednesday at Pershing, the Tritons downed the Bulldogs 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-21). Morgan Smith set a new career high with 20 digs.

Early on things were going the way of the Bulldogs as a 6-0 run in the first set gave them a 9-3 lead, spearheaded by kills from Emma Wollert and Sam Yancy. Eventually the Tritons would even the set at 12, and then the two seesawed back and forth giving and taking the lead. With Truman up 16-15, UMSL went on a 6-0 run of their own to take the lead. Back to back kills from Katy Motz and Smith brought Truman back within three, but they could not catch UMSL as the hosts won the first set.

UMSL grabbed a 9-4 lead to start the second set, but Truman responded with a 3-0 run. Emma Berthold picked up back to back kills and Ainsley Heise capped the run to bring Truman within two. Later in the set, with the score 13-10 Tritons, an 8-0 spurt put the hosts well ahead. Truman picked up the next four points but UMSL scored four the last five to end the set.

The Bulldogs led 7-3 early in the third set, as Yancy picked up two kills in the early going. The Tritons battled back and would tie the set at 13, but Ellie Kaat gave Truman the lead back with a kill to make it 14-13, but the Bulldogs could not hold the lead long as UMSL tied it back up. With the set at 18-17 Truman, UMSL scored five straight to take a 22-18 lead, and from there Truman could not close the gap as the Tritons swept the season series from the Bulldogs.

Yancy's eight kills led the way, Rachel DeFries led with 13 assists and Lindsay Woltering led with 24 digs.

Truman will conclude the regular season this weekend at home with matches against Lindenwood on Friday night at seven and Maryville at one Saturday afternoon.
