KIRKSVILLE, Mo.--The Truman Volleyball team snapped a five match losing skid Friday night as they defeated the visiting Lindenwood Lions 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-21). Sam Yancy grabbed a double-double with ten kills (tied for the team lead) and 13 digs (second on team). The team also recorded ten blocks, with Yancy tying with Ainsley Heise with three to lead the team, and Kate Benzing and Ellie Kaat each with two.
Truman jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first as Kaat and Heise notched the game's first two kills, and then Yancy picked up two later in the opening run. The Bulldogs expanded their lead to 12-4 as Morgan Smith and Emma Berthold spearheaded a 3-0 run. With the score at 14-7, a 6-0 spurt for the Bulldogs all but ended the set; Kaat picked up two kills in the run.
Like the first set, Truman came out hot in the second. A 6-2 lead for the Bulldogs to start the second set set the tone early. But the Lions would battle back, and eventually go up one on the Bulldogs at 11-10. But Truman answered with a 4-0 run, including a couple Lion errors and kills from Kaat and Yancy. From there the teams seesawed back and forth every couple points, but Lindenwood could not draw to within more than two points. With Truman up 23-21, Berthold gave Truman setpoint and an error by the Lions gave Truman the set.
The Lions took the early lead in the third set, jumping out to a 6-2 lead. Following a Truman timeout, the Bulldogs scored four straight as Yancy picked up another kill and Katy Motz notched a service ace. Eventually Truman took back the lead at 10-9 following a kill from Berthold. Truman stayed ahead in the middle of the set but the Lions took back the lead at 18-17. A few errors on both sides eventually leveled the set at 20, but from there Truman reeled off three straight: Smith started with a kill in a 3-0 spurt and then Kaat finished the set with the final kill.
Truman will be back at Pershing Arena for the final matchday of the regular season Saturday for Senior Day, starting at 1 PM.
