Perkins Launches Two Game Two Bombs, Bulldogs Split Sunday Doubleheader

MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The Truman Baseball team wrapped up its four game set at Christian Brothers University in Memphis this weekend with a split on Sunday, taking three of four games overall. In game one Michael Daggett got the nod and threw five innings but took the loss, while in the second game of the day it was Alex Leary who got the start and came away with the win as he threw five innings and allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Game 1

In the top of the second, Truman threatened with two runners in scoring position. Holden Missey got a leadoff single and then moved to third on a single by Luke Turner with one out. Turner then stole second but with two runners in scoring position they could not come around in the game stayed 0-0. In the top of the third, Tal Dean led off with a single but was thrown out on a fielder's choice at second. Simon Murray reached, then stole second, then moved to third on an error that allowed Luke Roussel to reach. Roussel stole second, later Missey was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases but once again the Bulldogs could not get a run in.

Truman got the first three runs of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Turner led off reaching on an error, then on a double by Sam Smith came in to score. Dean and Roussel walked to load the bases, and Brennan Perkins came up to the plate and reached on an error, which allowed two runs to score.

Daggett got in a little trouble in the first as he let two runners on with singles with two outs, but got the next batter on a fielder's choice to get out of the inning. He faced three batters in both the second and third before CBU struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth. From there CBU added three more runs.

Game 2

Starter Alex Leary went five innings and picked up the win, while tallying five strikeouts. He gave up three runs in the first two innings, but locked down the next three innings to set up Jackson Mitchell, who closed out the game in his first appearance as a Bulldog. Mitchell pitched the sixth inning and after that the game was called off due to lighting issues. Leary managed to get out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning that kept the game within reach for the Bulldogs.

In the top of the third Sam Smith got one back for the Bulldogs with a single to left with one out, and then Simon Murray hit a double down the left field line to score Smith from first base. Truman trailed 3-1 entering the top of the fifth when the offense cashed in big. Dean led off with a single to right, then stole second. Turner then singled to move Dean to third, but Perkins hit a three run jack to put Truman back on top with one swing. Missey followed with a single and then Will Fromm got his first homer of the year to put Truman up 6-3.

In the top of the sixth, Dean led off with a double. Then two batters later, with two outs, Perkins launched his second homer of the game to put Truman ahead 8-3.

The Bulldogs will be back in action this coming weekend as they take on MIAA foes, NW Missouri State, Missouri Southern and Missouri Western State at the MIAA/GLVC Crossover; which begins this Friday.
