Bulldogs Outlast Saints in Monday Night Showdown

ST. LOUIS—The Truman Men's Basketball team played their third game in five days Monday night as they took on Maryville University in St. Louis and emerged victorious in a challenging game over the Saints 68-64. Masen Miller and Elijah Hazekamp tied for the team lead in points with 17, while Cade McKnight added 15, Eric Northweather ten and Hunter Strait nine. Strait, Hazekamp and McKnight all tied for the team lead with seven boards while Miller led with six assists.

The teams exchanged leads 12 teams, starting very early in the game. The lead changed seven times in the first eight minutes of the game, as the teams seesawed back and forth. Maryville took a 10-9 lead with 12:59 left in the half, and held it most of the frame. But Truman hung around and finally broke through on a three pointer by Hazekamp with 3:32 left in the half to go up 26-25. Maryville answered, but with 30 seconds remaining Hazekamp completed a three point play following a layup to put Truman up 32-31 heading into the break.

Maryville scored the first eight of the second half, but a three from Hazekamp and a layup from Northweather cut the Bulldog deficit back to two points. After that a scoring drought of over four minutes kept the game at 39-37, until Maryville hit a jumper to go back up four. The Saints continued to hold their lead, and with 6:06 left Truman was down ten at 57-47. A fast break layup by Northweather, followed by threes from Hazekamp and Miller got Truman back within two, and then two foul shots by McKnight evened the game at 57 with 3:20 left. Strait made the go ahead layup with 1:24 left to take a 61-60 lead for the Bulldogs. But it would be a tense finish as Maryville came within one at 65-64 with 17 seconds left. From there, McKnight went 1-2 and Strait 2-2 from the foul line as Truman sealed the win.

The Bulldogs will get two days off before hosting William Jewell Thursday night at Pershing Arena.
