JOPLIN, Mo.—The Truman Baseball team took on Missouri Western Monday afternoon to close out the MIAA/GLVC Crossover event and fell 10-5 to the Griffons. The Bulldogs led 2-0 after five innings after two solo homers by Brennan Perkins, but from there MWSU controlled the game. Alex Leary (1-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs while Jeremy Schneider (1-2) was the winning pitcher.
With two outs in the first, Perkins faced a 1-2 count and drove one to left center to put the Bulldogs on the board. Leary got out of trouble in the top of the second with runners on the corners and one out he got a flyout and then a popout to end the threat. Leary also got out of trouble in the third with runners on the corners and two outs, with a strikeout to end the inning. Finally in the fourth Leary took out the Griffons 1-2-3 and then in the bottom of the inning Perkins launched his second dinger.
In the top of the sixth, MWSU went for seven runs (five earned), all of which were charged to Leary despite Luke Wilson coming in for the last out of the inning. Truman got one back in the bottom of the inning as Perkins hit an RBI double to right to bring in Luke Turner. In the bottom of the seventh, Turner hit a single through the left side to score Sam Smith, making it 7-4. It was 8-4 in the bottom of the eighth when Missey hit a solo shot to make it 8-5. But MWSU would get two more in the top of the ninth to make it 10-5.
Truman had three players with three hits—Perkins, Holden Missey and Luke Turner. Perkins finished with three RBI, and has 13 RBI through eight games this season.
Next weekend the Bulldogs will travel to Nashville to take on Trevecca Nazarene University in a four game set, which will feature two games on Friday and two on Saturday.
