TOPEKA, Kan. - The Truman Softball team took the first but dropped the second in a doubleheader against Fort Hays (Kan.) State on Saturday. Truman won the opener 4-2 before falling 7-0 in the nightcap. The team will be back in action on Sunday against Washburn (Kan.) University with first pitch slated for noon.
Game 1: Truman State 4, Fort Hays State 2
Maria McGonegle uncorked a three-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning and a Callie Unrein infield single in the seventh lifted the Truman State Bulldogs to a 4-2 win over the Tigers in the opener.
The Tigers got a leadoff home run in the bottom of the third to take the early lead and added solo shot in the fifth with two outs to go up 2-0.
Truman doubled their hit total in the sixth as Emma Walbert singled with one out and Unrein followed with a hit to left. After McKenzie West struck out swinging, McGonegle launched her first home run of the season on a 3-1 pitch to give Truman a 3-2 lead.
Fort Hays left a pair on base in their half of the sixth and the first two were retired for Truman to start the seventh. Kayla Quanstrum stroked a two-out double to left and Brieanna Klein coxed a walk with a full count to put runners at the corners. Walbert followed with a bunt single to load the bases. Unrein hit a ball to deep short that allowed all the runner to move up, including Quanstrum to home for the insurance run.
Nicole Havel went the distance for Truman State, allowing the two runs on six hits and striking out five.
Game 2: Fort Hays State 7, Truman State 0
Sarah Tiffany went 4-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs as the Tigers were able to earn the split with the Bulldogs 7-0.
Fort Hays scored two runs in the second, added another in the third and plated four in the fifth for all the scoring.
Lauren Stade collected a pair of hits, including a double, for Truman but the Bulldogs stranded six on the game.
