Upper Iowa Storms Back To Defeat Truman Women In Overtime 88-86

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Upper Iowa Peacocks earned their first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference win by overcoming a 16-point deficit with just under seven minutes to play and beat the Truman State Bulldogs 88-86 in overtime on Saturday.

The Bulldogs, behind three three-pointers by Claire Rake in the first quarter, grabbed the early lead and were up 24-20 after one and 41-38 at half.

Lexie White's three-pointer at the end of the third quarter pushed the advantage to 11 at 66-55. Molly Joyce scored nine of Truman's first 10 points in the fourth quarter and she capped off a personal 7-0 run to make the score 73-57 with 6:51 left to play.

The Peacocks fought back and closed to within four with 2:30 to go.

The Bulldogs had a couple of chances to extend the lead back out but came up empty.

With the score at 78-76, Truman turned the ball over off an inbounds play and the resulting foul led to free throws by Upper Iowa's Ava Privet with 32 ticks showing. She drained both setting up a chance for the Bulldogs to win it in regulation.

Emma Bulman's eight footer in the closing seconds bounced off the rim and the two teams went to overtime for the second straight time between the two schools.

Ellie Weltha scored the first three points in the extra session but Katie Tornstrom gave Upper Iowa the lead with free throws at the 2:51 mark.

Tornstrom followed with a three-pointer to push the lead out to 85-81.

Ainsley Tolson took over and scored on Truman's next possession and then made a tough shot while getting fouled to bring the Bulldogs back to within one at 87-86.

A blocked three-point attempt put the ball back in the Bulldogs hands but a missed jumper by Tolson and a rebound by the Peacocks kept it a one-point game.

Tornstrom hit just one free throw setting up a chance for Truman to tie or win in the final possession.

Weltha got a clean look at the top arc but the ball hit the side of the rim. Truman got the offensive rebound but couldn't get the shot off as time expired.

Weltha moved into eighth place on Truman's all-time scoring list after scoring 19 points. Tolson went over 1,500 for her career with 18 points and Rake finished with 15 on fire three-pointers. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 25 times.

Tornstrom finished with game-high honors of 21 points.

The two teams will play back-to-back with a trip by Truman to Upper Iowa next Saturday afternoon.
