KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Riding a three-game winning streak, the Truman State Football team heads across the Mississippi River bridge at Quincy, Illinois to take on the Hawks on Saturday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup.
The Bulldogs overcame a 20-0 deficit to the Hawks last year at Stokes Stadium to pull out a 33-27 overtime win. Truman State got a big stop on fourth and one with 3:21 to play trailing 27-24. Senior quarterback
Nolan Hair converted on a Bulldog fourth and three on the ensuing drive which eventually set up a 31-yard tying field goal by
Grant Ross in the waning seconds. In overtime,
Jake Closser picked Drake Davis in the endzone on the second Quincy play, and on the Bulldogs' second play, Hair rushed off the left side for a 20-yard walk-off winner.
After starting the season 0-3 to teams that currently have a combined 15-3 record, the Bulldogs have reeled off wins over Wayne (Mich.) State, Upper Iowa, and Missouri S&T to even their record to 3-3 on the season.
Truman State has also found its stride on both sides of the ball. The Bulldog offense is starting to roll behind running back
Denim Cook setting career-highs in single-game rushing the past two weeks,
Jackson Overton nearing single-season benchmarks in receiving touchdowns and quarterback
Dylan Hair completing 70% of his passing attempts while using his legs to gain over 150 yards rushing in the three wins. Cook is second in the GLVC in rushing yards per game at 102.8, Hair is fourth in passing yards at 204.8 and Overton is fourth in receiving yards at 61.8 with a league-high seven touchdown receptions.
On the defensive side, the Bulldogs have held their last three opponents to under 350 yards of total offense and under 80 yards rushing each game. After allowing 115 points in the first three games, the Bulldogs have limited their opponents to half that total in the next three outings.
Quincy, under the leadership of former Truman State offensive coordinator Jason Killday, has started the season with a 3-2 record. All five games have been played within the GLVC after their season opener against Drake (Iowa) was ruled a "no contest" with severe weather forcing the game to be halted before reaching a completion point.
The Hawks took their shot against conference leader Indianapolis last Saturday and came up short on the road 47-10. They previously defeated Missouri S&T 21-14 on the road and lost to Upper Iowa 29-27 at home in comparable results against past Truman State opponents.
Last Time Out:
Truman State fired on all cylinders in their 48-17 beatdown of Missouri S&T on Saturday night at Stokes Stadium. The Bulldogs amassed 559 yards of total offense on the night, the most since a 2019 game against Southwest Baptist (615).
Denim Cook posted his second straight 100-yard rushing game with a career-high 182 on 21 carries and two touchdowns. Cook averaged 8.7 yards per carry.
Dylan Hair was 12-of-15 for 267 yards and tossed four touchdown passes. Three were caught by
Jackson Overton, who became the first Bulldog receiver since Geoff Jensen in 2002 to nab three TD receptions in a game. Overton finished with 106 yards, his second 100-yard receiving game of the season, on just four catches.
The defense held Missouri S&T to only 301 yards of total offense with 76 on the ground and 225 through the air. They started the game with three straight "three and outs", forced another punt on the next drive and picked off a pass before the Miners got a field goal just before half to make the score 31-3. After two more "three and outs" in the second half, the Miners scored touchdowns in their final two possessions of the game.
Quincy and Indianapolis exchanged touchdowns on their first two possessions of the game last Saturday but then UINDY grabbed the lead on a pick-six by Kivonte Houston on the Hawks' next sequence to take a 14-7 lead.
The Hawks got a 30-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-10 but were shut out the remaining three quarters as UINDY rolled to a 47-10 victory. QU managed 312 yards of total offense while allowing 404 yards on defense. Drake Davis threw for 189 yards on 21 of 29 passing attempts but tossed a pair of interceptions. Teon Dollard was held to 48 yards rushing on 10 attempts.
Through Six Games:
Denim Cook has increased his carry load and yardage in each of the last five games and now is second in the GLVC in rushing at 102.8 yards per game. He has carried the ball 42 times in the last two games with 157 yards against Upper Iowa and 182 against Missouri S&T. He has scored rushing TDs in all but one game this year and has six on the season. The Bulldogs are averaging 183.7 yards rushing per game.
Dylan Hair has tossed 11 touchdown passes and thrown for 1,229 yards in six games as the starter. He has also rushed for 295 yards and two scores. Hair is averaging 204.8 yards passing per outing and is completing 57% of his pass attempts.
Jackson Overton is the top target with 24 catches for 371 yards. Overton already has seven TD receptions and needs just one more to crack the single-season top 10 at the school. The school record for touchdown receptions is 11 held by Larry Tisdale and set in 1985. Chris Kerr is second with 18 catches for 220 yards and one touchdown and
Joseph Spaulding has 11 catches for 138 yards.
The Bulldog defense has six players with over 20 tackles in the first six games led by
Brock Jones with 33,
Jake McCollum with 31 and SJ Johnson with 30. 13 defenders all have at least one tackle for loss and seven have accounted for eight quarterback sacks. Johnson,
Connor Baxley,
Robert Goehl and
Markiese Jones have the four interceptions. The unit has limited opponents to under 350 yards in their last three games.
Vinnie Calvaruso is 7-for-11 on field goals with a long of 42 and 19-of-20 on point-after attempts. He has averaged 55.5 yards on 35 kickoffs.
Mason Gessert has punted 21 times for a 33.7 yards per punt average with a long of 44 and seven inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
Jake Closser has averaged 27.7 on six punt returns including an 80-yard touchdown return.
Jack Butchko has a kickoff return for a score (96 yards) and has averaged 37.6 on seven attempts. Closser was the GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week following week four.
Up Next:
McKendree will be the homecoming opponent next week in Kirksville. The Bearcats are 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC and will host Indianapolis this weekend.
The Bulldogs have won the last six over McKendree and downed the Bearcats 56-24 last year in Lebanon, Illinois.
