KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The oldest rivalry the Truman State Bulldogs have on their schedule will be the opponent on Saturday when the Missouri S&T Miners visit Stokes Stadium for the only home night game of the year. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

This will be the 86th meeting between the two schools dating back 115 years to the first encounter in 1909. The Bulldogs have won the last five against Missouri S&T and are 56-25-4 all-time over the Miners.

In the week 11 season finale last year in Rolla, the Bulldogs scored the game's first 21 points and downed S&T 24-14. Truman State outrushed their opponents 175 to 31 and forced the Miners to punt on seven of their first 10 possessions with the other three ending at half, a fumble and one of their two touchdowns.

Both teams sit at 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Truman State powered their way past Upper Iowa last Saturday 26-23 for their second straight victory while Missouri S&T and Southwest Baptist exchanged big plays with the Miners racking up over 500 yards of total offense in a 65-24 win.
The Bulldogs are riding a five-game winning streak over the Miners. Missouri S&T last defeated Truman State in 2018 34-33 and last won at Stokes Stadium in 2017 27-11.

Last Time Out:
The Bulldogs overpowered Upper Iowa in their first visit to Fayette 26-23 on Saturday night. Denim Cook rushed for a career-high 157 yards on 21 attempts and caught three passes for 11 yards. It was Truman State's second straight victory.

Once again, the Bulldogs had to play from behind as Upper Iowa grabbed the early lead on a five-play, 76-yard drive resulting in a 14-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring in the first quarter. Denim Cook scored on a four-yard run on the ensuing possession but still trailed 7-6 following a missed extra point.

Jackson Overton hauled in a 34-yard pass from Dylan Hair midway through the second and Vinnie Calvaruso added a 25-yard field goal just before half to stake Truman State out to a 16-10 advantage.

Upper Iowa climbed back on top with the only score in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs had to settle for a 21-yard Calvaruso field goal on the first play of the fourth quarter to go up 19-17 and then Joseph Spaulding got behind the defense for a 25-yard TD pass from Hair to put Truman up by two scores at 26-17.  Upper Iowa scored in the final minute to pull closer but Cook recovered the onside kick to seal the win.

Truman State rushed for 234 yards on 40 attempts while only allowing the Peacocks 66 rushing yards on the night. The defense held Upper Iowa to 2-of-12 on third downs but the Peacocks were 4-of-5 on fourth down conversions.

Missouri S&T rolled to a big 65-24 win over Southwest Baptist at home on Saturday night. Quarterback Tyler Gioia and receiver/returner Gideon Niboh earned GLVC Player of the Week honors for the win. Gioia completed 21-of-30 pass attempts for 372 yards and four touchdown passes while Niboh caught four passes for 110 yards including an 86-yard TD reception and added a 79-yard punt return score plus a long 37-yard kickoff return.

The Miners racked up 548 yards of total offense and an additional 148 yards on special team returns.

The game featured big plays with seven scores occurring on plays over 20 yards. SBU scored touchdowns on a 45-yard pass, an 80-yard pass and a 50-yard field goal while Missouri S&T scored on a 23-yard pass, 79-yard punt return, two 50-yard passes and an 86-yard pass.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs head across the river to Quincy (Ill.) University to renew their rivalry with the Hawks, this time with a new twist. Former Truman State offensive coordinator Jason Killday is the new head coach for Quincy and has guided the Hawks to a 3-1 start this season. The Hawks travel to Indianapolis this weekend.

Truman State climbed out of a 20-0 hole, kicked a field goal at the end of regulation to force overtime, picked off a pass in the extra session to start and scored on the second play from scrimmage once taking possession to win a thriller 33-27.
