BOLIVAR, Mo. - A costly eighth inning allowed Southwest Baptist to score three times and take the Great Lakes Valley Conference series finale 4-3 on Sunday. The Bearcats won the series 3-1.
Oliver Degenhard led off the game with a solo home run to stake the Bulldogs out to a 1-0 lead. A leadoff error in the fourth came around to score for the Bearcats to tie things up.
Grant Beck started the seventh by greeting SBU's relief pitcher with a single up the middle. Collin Mueth executed the sacrifice bunt to move Beck up 90 feet and Degenhard came through with a single to right scoring Beck for the 2-1 lead.
Zachry Schneider was strong on the bump for Truman as he allowed only three hits and the one unearned run through seven innings. Unfortunately it was the eighth when SBU did their damage. With the first two hitters retired, a single followed by a passed ball and then a walk put runners at the corners. A second pitching change saw a walk load the bases then all three runs would eventually score on wild pitches to put SBU in front 4-2.
PJ Jerszynski doubled as a pinch hitter in Truman's last at bat and moved up on a wild pitch. He would score on a groundout by Mueth to get the Bulldogs to within one. However, SBU got the final out to secure the win.
Degenhardt was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
The Bulldogs return home next weekend for a GLVC series with Missouri-St. Louis. The opener will be Friday at 3 p.m.
