HBP stymies sweep; St. Cloud State downs ‘Dogs 16-6

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A 5-3 Truman State lead after six evaporated as St. Cloud State (Minn.) outscored the Bulldogs 13-1 in the final  three innings to win 16-6.

The Bulldogs went after the sweep scoring two runs in the bottom of the first when sophomore Oliver Degenhardt drew a one-out walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior Tyler Tieman caught the Husky defense napping after being issued a walk, drawing a play at second on a stolen base allowing Degenhardt to swipe the plate. Senior Luke Roussel singled Tieman in to give Truman State the 2-0 advantage.

The 'Dogs went to the bullpen for the St. Cloud State second with redshirt freshman Warner Lenahan working the next five innings. The Huskies tied things with runs in the second and third when the top of the Truman State lineup came through with another pair. Junior Dakota Joggerst drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a Tieman double with both scoring on another RBI single from Roussel. Tieman went 2-3 with a walk and three runs scored while Roussel's three RBI led the Purple and White in a 3-4 day at the plate.

Lenahan exited in the seventh having loaded the bases on a pair of hit by pitches and singles. Truman State pitchers hit five Husky pitchers in an inning where St. Cloud State scored six despite only getting three singles.

The Huskies scored three more in the eighth and another four in the ninth as Truman State went deep into its pen in the 16-6 loss. The Bulldog defense committed four errors after only one in the first two games of the series.

The 2-1 series win over St. Cloud State featured 15.1 innings out of Game 1 and Game 2 starters Isaac Epp and Nick Phillips while the 25 runs scored in the series bests the 13 scored in four games against Rockhurst (Mo.) February 24 and 25. Joggerst went 6-11 with six runs scored across the three games while Tieman had three RBI on four hits and Roussel was 6-12 with seven RBI. Degenhardt scored four runs in a 5-15 series at the plate.

Bulldog Baseball, 3-12, opens its 2025 GLVC season with a 1-2-1 four-game set at Upper Iowa, 4-10, 1-3 GLVC, March 14-16 in Fayette, Iowa.
