KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman State Bulldogs overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Quincy 91-88 in overtime Wednesday night at Pershing Arena. The victory improved Truman State's record to 8-10 overall and 5-5 in conference play, while Quincy fell to 8-9 (3-6).
Truman State came out strong in the first half, building an early lead behind balanced scoring. Quientan McCafferty provided an early spark with eight points in the opening half, including a pair of three-pointers that helped extend the Bulldogs' advantage. Drew Kingery also connected on a pair of three-pointers as Truman State's offense clicked, shooting 52.8% from the field and 42.9% from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs built their largest lead at 13 points (53-40) at the 18:48 mark of the second half before taking a 47-38 advantage into halftime.
The Hawks mounted a determined comeback in the second half. Quincy's offensive duo of Tiernan Stynes and Camren Kincaid orchestrated a steady rally, repeatedly attacking the paint. Ethyn Brown hit a crucial three-pointer at 11:54 of the second half to cut the deficit to 60-59, suddenly making it a one-point game and igniting the Quincy comeback.
The closing minutes featured dramatic back-and-forth action. With 2:50 remaining in regulation, Ethan Bolton buried a three-pointer to give Quincy its first lead since early in the game at 73-72. Emmanuel Byrd answered with a free throw to tie the game at 73-73 with 2:36 left.
Ethyn Brown's three-pointer at 2:10 pushed Quincy ahead 76-73, but Jahki Parrinello's driving layup with 40 seconds left brought Truman within one at 76-75. After Byrd's tip-in layup with 24 seconds remaining gave the Bulldogs a 77-76 lead, Stynes answered with a pull-up jumper at 10 seconds to put Quincy back on top 78-77.
Parrinello was fouled with five seconds left and made one of two free throws to tie the game at 78-78. Drew Kingery's last-second layup attempt missed, and the rebound was secured by Truman State as time expired, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, Stynes opened the scoring with a driving layup to give Quincy an 80-78 lead. Parrinello answered with his own driving basket to tie it at 80-80. After Parrinello made two free throws to put the Bulldogs up 82-80, Ethyn Brown made a pair of free throws for the Hawks to knot the score at 82-82 with 3:15 remaining.
Wallingford's dunk at 2:49 gave Quincy an 84-82 lead, but Parrinello tied it again at 84-84 with a driving layup and free throw at 2:35. Julian Brown's step-back three-pointer with 41 seconds remaining gave Truman an 88-86 advantage. Kincaid's driving layup tied it at 88-88 with 30 seconds left, but Brown delivered the final blow, a deep three-pointer with two seconds remaining to seal the 91-88 victory.
