KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Truman State Athletics earned four victories and two draws across nine team competitions from Wednesday, Sept. 9, through Sunday, Sept. 13. Women's cross country won the Larry Young Invitational with five scoring runners in the top eight, while the men placed second. Volleyball swept Newman and Maryville during the Truman State Tournament, and men's soccer earned a 1-0 road victory over Rockhurst before tying Maryville. Women's soccer played Maryville to a 2-2 draw after falling at Rockhurst, while football erased a 14-point deficit before losing 31-24 in overtime to Northeastern State during the Hall of Fame Game.
The weekend also celebrated the induction of Truman's 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 women's swimming national championship teams into the Truman Athletics Hall of Fame.
Football
Northeastern State 31, Truman 24 | Saturday, Sept. 12
Truman rallied from 14 points behind to take a third-quarter lead, but Northeastern State recovered and defeated the Bulldogs 31-24 in overtime Saturday during the Hall of Fame Game at Stokes Stadium.
The RiverHawks scored twice during the opening quarter before Truman began its comeback. Diego Perez connected on a 33-yard field goal early in the second quarter to put the Bulldogs on the board. After Northeastern State answered with a field goal, Madden Irving scored on runs of two yards and one yard during the final three minutes of the half. The second touchdown followed a blocked punt that gave Truman possession at the Northeastern State 20-yard line and sent the teams into halftime tied at 17.
Truman opened the second half with an 11-play, 77-yard drive that consumed more than seven minutes. Dylan Hair completed the possession with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Overton, giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 24-17. Northeastern State responded with a 73-yard scoring drive, tying the game on Donnie Smith's nine-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Butler.
Neither team scored during the fourth quarter. Truman missed a 38-yard field goal with 10:23 remaining, and the Bulldogs later stopped Northeastern State's attempt to win the game when a 29-yard field goal missed with one second left.
Northeastern State scored first in overtime, converting a fourth-and-goal opportunity with Smith's three-yard touchdown pass to Deuce Roberson. Truman's possession ended on an interception on the second play, allowing the RiverHawks to escape with the victory.
Irving led Truman with 135 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, including a 48-yard run that set up his first score. Hair added 54 rushing yards and completed 14 of 23 passes for 114 yards and a touchdown. Kel Battle led the receiving corps with 56 yards on three catches, while Overton caught five passes and scored once.
The Bulldogs rushed for 201 yards and controlled possession for more than 33 minutes. Northeastern State finished with 400 total yards, including 336 through the air. Connor Beerman, Bryant Pool and Alijah Jackman each recorded eight tackles for Truman, while Jack Weltha added seven. The loss moved the Bulldogs to 0-3.
Volleyball
Truman 3, Newman 0 | Friday, Sept. 11
Truman opened its home schedule with a 25-22, 25-9, 25-21 sweep of Newman during the first match of the Truman State Tournament inside Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs pulled away from a competitive opening set and dominated the second before closing the sweep in three.
Truman hit .245 with 39 kills while holding Newman to a .131 percentage. Jessie Julius and Laci Neece shared the team lead with 11 kills apiece. Julius added 10 digs for a double-double, while Neece hit .240.
Elise Gibson recorded five kills without an error on 12 attacks for a .417 percentage. Autumn Erickson added six kills, three blocks and two service aces, while Adalyn Galbraith also contributed three blocks. Tori Creason finished with 29 assists, and Addy Janssen collected 10 digs. The Bulldogs recorded seven service aces and six team blocks.

Truman 3, Maryville 0 | Friday, Sept. 11
The Bulldogs completed a perfect tournament with a 25-22, 25-23, 27-25 sweep of Maryville in the night match. Truman won three competitive sets, holding off the Saints in the third to finish the day without dropping a set.
Erickson led the attack with 16 kills and only one error on 32 attempts, producing a .469 hitting percentage. Neece added 11 kills and 15 digs, while Gibson finished with nine kills and hit .304. Creason distributed 36 assists and added 12 digs.
Truman's defense collected 77 digs and 10 team blocks. Janssen led the back row with 21 digs and two service aces. Galbraith recorded five blocks, including four solo stops, while Erickson added three. The Bulldogs limited Maryville to a .157 hitting percentage and improved to 4-6 with their third consecutive victory.
Cross Country
Truman Women Win Larry Young Invitational | Friday, Sept. 11
The Truman women opened their season by winning the Larry Young Invitational at the Gans Creek Cross Country Course in Columbia. The Bulldogs scored 26 points to finish first among 11 teams, defeating runner-up Park University by 68 points. Truman's five scoring runners all placed among the top eight, and seven Bulldogs finished inside the top 11.
Kate Yates led Truman by completing the 5,000-meter race in 19:03.1 and placing second overall. Clare Stahr followed in fourth at 19:10.1, while Phoebe Canatsey placed fifth in 19:23.3. Sarah Williams finished seventh at 19:41.7, and Kendra Zeilstra completed the scoring group in eighth at 19:50.4.
Anna Ripley and Ellie Webb also finished inside the top 11. Ripley placed 10th in 19:52.2, while Webb crossed in 11th at 19:57.4. Truman's five scoring runners posted an average time of 19:25.7 and were separated by only 47.3 seconds.
Truman Men Place Second at Larry Young Invitational | Friday, Sept. 11
The Truman men scored 64 points to finish second among 10 teams in the 8,000-meter race. Columbia College won the team title with 23 points.
Nolan Meara led the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish in 26:48.4. Evan Wilke placed 10th in 27:22.7, followed closely by Jacob Snyder in 11th at 27:31.6. Andrew Kuehler finished 16th overall and earned 15 team points with a time of 27:44.3.
Logan Ghormley completed Truman's scoring group in 28th with a time of 28:32.0. The Bulldogs averaged 27:35.8 among their five scoring runners, while Max Hogan and Owen Siever also contributed as Truman's sixth and seventh finishers.
Women's Soccer
Rockhurst 1, Truman 0 | Wednesday, Sept. 9
Rockhurst scored during the 11th minute and held Truman scoreless for a 1-0 victory Wednesday in Kansas City. Caitlyn Smith delivered the game's only goal at 10:49, scoring from 35 yards off an assist from Jacie Tottleben.
Truman generated six of its 10 shots during the second half but could not find an equalizer. Lizzy Peng and Tessa Paradis recorded the Bulldogs' two shots on goal, while Ashley Klaus led Truman with three total attempts. Mikayla Thomas made four saves in goal. Rockhurst finished with 13 shots and five attempts on goal.
Truman 2, Maryville 2 | Sunday, Sept. 13
Truman erased a two-goal deficit during the final 25 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw against Maryville on Sunday at Bulldog Soccer Park.
Emily Doane gave Maryville the lead at 28:00, and Isabella Moilanen doubled the advantage at 58:46. Quinn Nauman started the Truman comeback with an unassisted goal at 65:44, scoring her second goal of the season. Lizzy Peng then tied the match at 77:50, finishing an assist from Abby Hutteger for her second goal of the year.
Truman placed 11 of its 16 shots on goal. Maryville also recorded 11 shots on goal while finishing with 20 total attempts. Thomas made six saves during the first 63:39 before Siman Loethen entered and stopped all three shots on goal she faced. Nauman and Lia Quintero led the Bulldogs with three shots apiece as Truman moved to 1-2-3 overall and 0-1-2 in the GLVC.
Men's Soccer
Truman 1, Rockhurst 0 | Wednesday, Sept. 9
Roman Scognamillo scored the game's only goal, and Truman held Rockhurst scoreless to earn a 1-0 road victory Wednesday in Kansas City.
The teams combined for only six shots apiece during the defensive contest. Scognamillo broke the scoreless tie at 64:15, scoring on a 20-yard breakaway for his first goal of the season. His shot was Truman's only attempt on goal.
Owen Robben made three saves to record the shutout. The Bulldogs also defended eight Rockhurst corner kicks while earning their second victory of the season and first in GLVC play.
Truman 2, Maryville 2 | Sunday, Sept. 13
Truman twice answered Maryville goals before the Saints scored late to force a 2-2 draw Sunday at Bulldog Soccer Park.
Maryville took the lead just 2:12 into the match on a goal from Petter Hanssen. Brady Lombardo responded at 9:28, scoring his second goal of the season off an assist from Zachary Painter. The match remained tied until Jacob Panagos gave Truman a 2-1 advantage at 75:57. Slayton Spencer provided the assist as Panagos scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year.
The Bulldogs remained in front until Julian Stoecker converted a penalty kick for Maryville at 87:10. Robben made five saves over the opening 87:11 before Stuart Whitmer entered and stopped the only shot he faced. Maryville finished with a 22-8 advantage in shots, while Truman placed four attempts on goal. The Bulldogs moved to 2-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
