KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman men's basketball team lit up the scoreboard from long-range, draining 12 three-pointers en route to an 82-47 rout of Hannibal-LaGrange on Tuesday night in Pershing Arena. Senior guard Alex Henderson led the way with 18 points, while freshman guard Isaac Gardner came off the bench to add 15 points on five treys.
The Bulldogs (2-1) used a 12-0 run at the end of the first-half to turn a 26-24 lead with 4:32 to play into a 38-24 halftime cushion. Truman then continued its roll, out-scoring HLG (2-6) 28-7 over the first ten minutes of the second half, to open up a 35-point lead at 66-31 with 9:26 to play in the game. From there, Truman's bench maintained the edge on the way to the 82-47 final.
Truman shot 44% from the field for the game, but made it count from distance by hitting 12 of its 20 three-point attempts. The 12 three-pointers mark the most for the Bulldogs since downing 12 at Emporia State on Feb. 21, 2007. The 'Dogs also converted its free points at the charity stripe, hitting 12-of-14 attempts.
The Bulldogs have been deadly from distance at the start of the 2010-2011 campaign, connecting at a 45.6% (31-for-68) clip as a team.
Henderson (Willard, Mo., Willard) continued his hot start to the 2010-2011 season by leading all players with 18 points, 15 of which came in the first 20 minutes. After seeing just seconds of action in the first half, Gardner (Washington, Iowa, Washington) scored all 15 of his points in the second half to notch his new career-high through just three games as a Bulldog. Senior guard Stefan Garrison (Osceola, Mo., Osceola) added nine, and freshman guard Marek Bush (Kansas City, Mo., Lincoln Prep) chipped in eight off the bench in just eight minutes of action.
Junior center Vesko Filchev (Plovdiv, Bulgaria, GPCHE) pulled down ten rebounds, as the purple and white controlled the glass – out-rebounding the Trojans, 43-25. The 'Dogs also converted 18 second-chance points off 14 offensive rebounds and limited HLG to just three extra chances off misses.
Josh Boswell led HLG with 18 points.
Truman travels to Quincy (Ill.) University on Saturday (Nov. 27) night at 7:30 p.m. The Hawks were 2-0 on the season prior to Tuesday night's battle against Missouri Western.
