(KIRKSVILLE, MO.) –Jaclyn Schumann converted on the back end of a Kelsey Twellman corner kick in the game's 31st minute, and a combined shutout by Jayne Grisham and Emily Bozdeck made it stick, as the Truman women's soccer team handed Northwest Missouri a 1-0 defeat to start MIAA play on Thursday afternoon.
Schumann (Wauconda, Ill., Wauconda) found herself unmarked on the back post and planted a blast into the top right corner of the net for the game's only goal, as she entered the scoring category for the first time in 2010.
Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy), meanwhile, picked up her third assist of the season, as Truman moved to 2-1 overall and picked up three points in the MIAA standings with the win.
Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy) made two first half saves before
Bozdeck (St. Louis, Mo., Lindbergh) entered to stop five Bearcat shots on goal in the second 45 minutes. Bozdeck made her biggest save in the 90
th minute, tipping a shot by Northwest's Kelsey Sanders over the top of the bar to preserve Truman's first shutout of the season.
The Bulldogs outshot Northwest (0-2-1, 0-1 MIAA) 25-9 for the game and held a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal en route to moving to 22-0 all-time against the Bearcats in the all-time series.
Truman will host Nebraska-Omaha (1-2, 1-0 MIAA) at noon on Saturday at the Bulldog Soccer Park.
