HAYS, Kan. - - The No. 6 Fort Hays State University men's basketball team closed out the first half on a 26-12 run to pull away from Truman on Monday night, eventually handing the 'Dogs a 84-57 setback in Gross Memorial Coliseum.
Truman (3-7, 1-5 MIAA) never led in the game but trailed the 6th-ranked Tigers by just five, 20-15, following an Ethan Freeman (Urbandale, Iowa, Urbandale) free throw at the 10:22 mark of the first half. But, from there it was all Tigers, as FHSU (11-1, 5-1 MIAA) opened up a 46-27 halftime lead before pushing it to 67-35 with 11:47 to play.
For the game, the Bulldogs shot the ball at a 40% (18-for-45) mark and went 17-for-25 (68%) from the free throw line. Truman hit just four three-pointers, more than five below its season average, and turned the ball over 15 times.
Freeman led all Bulldogs with 17 points and six rebounds, while Isaac Gardner (Washington, Iowa, Washington) came off the bench to drop a trio of three-pointers for nine total points.
Dominique Jones led FHSU with 23 points and seven assists, as the Tigers shot 56% from the field.
Truman returns to action on Wednesday night (Jan. 5) at Nebraska-Omaha. Tipoff from Sapp Fieldhouse is set for 7:30 pm.
