Cannon Wins Number 250 as Bulldogs Continue MIAA Roll

EMPORIA, Kan. - - Sophomore Trisha Shoemaker's team-leading seventh goal of the season late in the first half helped the Truman women's soccer team pick up a 1-0 MIAA win at Emporia State on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, head coach Mike Cannon earned his 250th career win, becoming only the eighth coach in Div. II history to accomplish the feat.

The Bulldogs (8-4-2, 6-0 MIAA) picked up right where they left off in this current stretch of five straight shutouts, outshooting the Hornets (2-8-4, 1-5 MIAA) 17-6 for the match and 10-3 on goal. Truman was all around the net in the opening 30 minutes, finally breaking through in the 35th when Shoemaker (Pleasant Valley, Iowa, Pleasant Valley) took the ball from near midfield and dribbled in unassisted for the 1-0 lead.

Senior Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy), who notched her fifth straight shutout (solo and combined), made three saves to help the 'Dogs make it a perfect 6-for-6 in MIAA contests this season. Shoemaker and Megan Buri (Parkville, Mo., Park Hill South) led the team in shots with four apiece, while Kelsey Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy) added three.

Cannon, meanwhile, joins exclusive company by securing his 250th career victory, running his career record to 250-88-37 (.716) in 19 seasons at Truman. Only 48 coaches across all three NCAA divisions have won that many matches, with Cannon becoming just the eighth to do so all-time at the Div. II level. Also during that time, his teams have gone 122-18-18 (.829) in MIAA play with nine conference titles in 12 seasons.

The Bulldogs have four matches at home to close out the 2011 regular season during the next two weeks, beginning this Thursday (Oct. 20) with a 2:00 pm game against Missouri Southern at the Truman Soccer Park.
