Twellman Spells Trouble Again for MSSU

KIRKSVILLE - - For the second time this season, Kelsey Twellman scored a free kick goal in overtime against Missouri Southern to help the Truman women's soccer team hand the Lions a 2-1 defeat on Thursday afternoon.

Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy) buried a 35-yard shot into the top right corner of the net with 1:45 to play in the first overtime to send Truman to its sixth-consecutive victory. It was Twellman's sixth goal of the season and fourth game-winner, copying a similar result in the 94th minute of a match against MSSU in Joplin earlier this season.

The Bulldogs (9-4-2) dominated possession throughout most of the match, outshooting the Lions (5-8-1) 25-3 on the day. Sophomore Trisha Shoemaker (Pleasant Valley, Iowa, Pleasant Valley) got the scoring going just before the half, corralling a slick feed from senior Jaclyn Schumann (Wauconda, Ill., Wauconda) and finding pay-dirt in the 44th minute. It was Shoemaker's team-leading eighth goal of the year.

Despite Truman's stranglehold on possession, the Lions found a goal in the 61st minute when Megan Stueve scored off a Danai Noftz throw-in to even the score at one apiece.

The Bulldogs had several chances to end it in regulation – none greater than a Schumann rocket in the 87th minute that was cleared off the end-line by a Southern defender. Annie Skornia (Manchester, Mo., Parkway South) nearly capped the match in the first 21 seconds of overtime, but her shot skimmed off the top of the crossbar.

Truman returns to the pitch this Saturday for a 12:00 pm kickoff against Southwest Baptist at the Truman Soccer Park.
