Soccer Secures Seventh Straight

KIRKSVILLE - - Senior Jaclyn Schumann and junior Kelsey Twellman both scored and the Truman defense posted its sixth shutout in the past seven games, as the Bulldog women's soccer team defeated Southwest Baptist 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Dog Park.

Schumann (Wauconda, Ill., Wauconda) put the first number on the board in the 34th minute, using her head to finish a Twellman corner kick and put the Bulldogs ahead 1-0. The margin would stay at that until the 64th minute, when Stasia Montgomery (Riverside, Mo., Park Hill South) started a Truman transition, finding Megan Buri (Parkville, Mo., Park Hill South) in the middle of the field. Buri then flicked a pass to the wing for Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy), where she scored her 7th goal of the year on a 25-yard blast.

The 'Dogs took 25 shots overall to just four for the visiting Bearcats while also accumulating six corners. Twellman and Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) tied for the Bulldog high in shots with six apiece, and Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy) made three saves in 90 minutes to pick up the shutout in goal.

With the win, Truman booked one of the top two seeds in the MIAA tournament, held Nov. 3-6 in Kansas City.

The Bulldogs move to 10-4-2 on the season, 7-0 in the MIAA, and will close out the regular season with a pair of home matches next weekend, starting on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 pm against Emporia State.
