Twellman’s Goal Leads Bulldogs to Thursday Victory

KIRKSVILLE - - Junior Kelsey Twellman scored her sixth goal in eight games, and the Truman defense stifled any Emporia State attack as the Bulldogs women's soccer team notched its eighth consecutive victory with a 1-0 win on Thursday afternoon.

The game's only scoring would come in the 18th minute, when Twellman (St. Louis, Mo., Incarnate Word Academy) was on the receiving end of a ball set up by both sophomore Trisha Shoemaker (Pleasant Valley, Iowa, Pleasant Valley) and junior Olivia Hayes (Clayton, Mo., Clayton) to find the back of the net and put Truman on top 1-0.

From there, the Bulldogs (11-4-2) maintained pressure, firing 25 shots to just two for the visiting Hornets (2-9-5). Truman earned five corner kicks in the match, as senior keeper Jayne Grisham (Bridgeton, Mo., Ursuline Academy) earned her sixth shutout of the season by stopping one ESU shot on goal.

Truman will close the 2011 regular season with a home match on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 pm against 10th-ranked Central Missouri. The winner will secure the No. 1 seed in next weekend's MIAA tournament, to be held at UMKC.
