KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Tennis teams closed out their fall home season with a pair of 6-3 victories over regional rival Quincy University (Ill.) on Tuesday night. The men finish the fall with a 3-0 dual mark while the women, who play this weekend at Western Illinois, close out the dual season with a 2-1 record.
The women were victorious in three tightly contested doubles matches with
Ellen Russell and
Dagmar Velez prevailed 8-4 at number one,
Kim Birenbaum and
Kelsey Porter edged out a 9-7 decision at number two and Kati Austin and Jess Gennuso pulled out an 8-6 win at number three.
Russell and Velez both won in straight sets in the top two singles spots to clinch the dual while Austin did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 win at number five.
The men also competed in three fierce doubles matches to start the dual. The freshman pair of
Jake Ohlhausen and
Griffin Smith put Truman on the board first with an 8-6 win at number
two while
Adam King and
Joe Murphy-Baum made it 2-0 with a 8-4 victory at number three. The Hawks Ian Hinkamper and Lane Luhring sneaked out a 9-8 win over
Eric McCollough and
Mark Sturley to close the gap in the top doubles match.
The Hawks and Bulldogs exchanged wins through the first four singles matches until Murphy-Baum and Merchant got the dual win with victories at number five and six singles. Murphy-Baum took number five 6-2, 6-3 and Merchant won number six also in straight sets.
