Volleyball Falls in Gripping Road Affair

Box Score | Season Stats

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - - The Truman volleyball team fought back from a 2-1 deficit to force a decisive fifth set on Saturday night at Missouri Western, but it was the host Griffons that held on for a 3-2 (-15, 22-25, -15, 18-25, 16-14) victory and sent the Bulldogs to a weekend split.

The Bulldogs (18-13, 7-8 MIAA) came out of the gates slowly, committing a total of 22 hitting errors in the first two sets, but came away with a 1-1 split after closing the second set on a 7-3 run. The squad began to cut the errors down in the third but still were put in a 2-1 hole by the host Griffons (13-15, 6-9 MIAA), forcing Truman to rally and hit .353 with 14 kills in a victorious fourth set.

The squads traded punches in the fifth, battling back and forth to 13-13 before a Megan Sharpe kill gave the 'Dogs match point. However, the Griffons got two straight kills by Meredith McCormick before a Bulldog error on MWSU's match point closed the book on the night and gave the Griffs a 16-14 extra-point fifth set win.

Sharpe led all players with 17 kills, while freshman Allie Brak came in right behind her with 16 of her own. The duo combined for 33 of Truman's 58 kills on the night, with both Emily Briseno and Lauren Radix adding five kills apiece. Both Kylie Easlon (28) and Meghan Zimmerman (20) reached the 20-assist mark and each came up just shy of a double-double with nine digs.

Freshman Abby Moser dug 17 Griffon attacks, while Brak added 14 to pick up a double-double. Both teams struggled blocking, with just five each, as Sharpe's three assisted blcoks led the Bulldogs defensively at the net.

The Bulldogs have three matches to play in the 2011 regular season, with Wednesday (Nov. 9) night's match against Southwest Baptist serving as the home finale. First serve against the Bearcats is set for 7:00 pm.
