Friday Box Scores: ASU | ODU
DECATUR, Ala. - - Truman softball opened its 2011 season with a split at the University of Alabama-Huntsville Charger Chillout, starting with a 5-1 loss to Augusta (Ga.) State before battling back for a 6-3 win against Ohio Dominican.
In the first game, Truman left eight runners on base and tied ASU with eight hits, but the Jaguars came through with three extra-base hits and benefited on a pair of errors to add a trio of insurance runs in the fifth to win, 5-1. The Bulldogs balanced its hitting up and down the lineup, getting a hit from eight different players, with Meredith Kusky (Ballwin, Mo., Nerinx Hall) crossing the plate on a Katie Pitts RBI single in the top of the third.
Then, in the nightcap, the Bulldogs got rolling early by plating three in the first before tacking on two more in the fifth and one in the sixth for a 6-3 win against ODU. Pitts (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias High School) and Alex Weber (Manhattan, Ill., Lincoln-Way Central High School) scored twice each, and Mary Manley recorded a two-RBI double in the fifth. The 'Dogs pounded out seven hits in back of Elizabeth Grover, who picked up her first win as a Bulldog by throwing six innings.
Truman returns to action on Saturday with a pair of contests against Arkansas Tech and 6th-ranked Wayne (Mich.) State.
