Truman/MSSU Box Score (L 13-0; 5 innings)
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - - The Truman softball team picked up a split on the first day of the MIAA crossover weekend event on Friday afternoon, beating Pittsburg (Kan.) State, 10-9, before falling, 13-0, to Missouri Southern.
In the day's opener, the Bulldogs found themselves down, 6-3, heading into the top of the seventh inning against Pitt State. But after Laura Miller blasted a one-out solo shot, Kelsey Bollman and Mary Manley put up back-to-back hits to occupy second and third in front of Bridget Schade. Schade then delivered, putting a single into left center, plating both, and tying the game at six apiece.
After reliever Beth Schnurbusch held the Gorillas quiet in the bottom of the seventh, forcing extra innings, the Bulldogs took advantage of two PSU errors in the top of the eighth to score four and build a 10-6 lead. However, Pitt State wouldn't go quietly, scoring three quick runs with only one out. After a strikeout, Pitt put two aboard before having the final batter fly out to left and secure the Truman victory.
Miller and Manley had three hits apiece, with Manley driving home three runs. The two squads combined for 26 hits and eight errors, but Schnurbusch emerged the winner in the circle – moving to 5-4 on the year.
However, in the second game, Missouri Southern pounded 13 hits and took advantage of six walks to shutout the Bulldogs, 13-0, in a run-shortened game. Manley had the only Bulldog hit against MSSU starter Nicole Reed, spelling the end of Bollman's 17-game hitting streak.
Truman (12-10) returns to action tomorrow with games against Lincoln (2 pm) and Emporia State (4 pm).
