JOPLIN, Mo. - - The Truman softball team split Sunday's doubleheader to close out the Missouri Southern Invitational, taking the opener, 6-3, against Illinois-Springfield before falling 7-4 to Northeastern (Okla.) State in the final game. The Bulldogs are now 9-7 on the season and will host Maryville (Mo.) on Wednesday afternoon at 1 pm in their home opener.
In the first game of Sunday's twinbill, the Bulldogs put three quick runs on the board in defense of starter Kirsten Krause and held off the Illinois-Springfield Prairie Stars, 6-3. Laura Miller, Mary Manley and Meredith Kusky recorded RBI-hits in the inning as the 'Dogs pounded four early hits against UIS' pitcher.
Miller and Katie Pitts posted RBI singles in the fourth, moving the lead to 5-0, before UIS scratched the scoreboard with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. However, Kelsey Bollman drove home Alyssa Perry on a sacrifice fly in the sixth to add an additional piece of insurance, preserving the three-run decision.
Krause scattered five hits in her complete game effort to move to 3-0 on the year.
Then, in the nightcap, Truman jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first, when Kelsey Bollman hit a leadoff homerun to right. The freshman, who is now hitting .468 on the season, added a double later to help raise her season-long slugging percentage to nearly .900.
However, the Riverhawks would put seven up on Truman starter Beth Schnurbusch, forcing Truman to bring on Elizabeth Grover in relief for the final four innings. Grover would keep Truman in it, holding NSU scoreless in the final frames, but a run in the fourth and two more in the seventh wouldn't be enough for the Bulldogs in their quest to sweep the weekend.
