QUINCY, Ill. – Two matches determined the outcome of the men's and women's duals with Quincy University on Wednesday. John Moskal won a three-set match over Mike Merchant to give the Hawks a 5-4 victory over the men and Amy Ochs won 7-6, 6-2 at number two singles to give the women a 5-4 victory over their counterpart.
Ochs and Ellen Russell grabbed the only Truman point in doubles with an 8-2 win over Michelle Bertelsman and Lauren Henry as the other two doubles matches went Quincy's way 8-5 and 8-4.
The top part of the Bulldog order righted the ship as Kelsey Kuykendall set the tone with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number one. Kuykendall now has 86 career singles wins which ranks third all-time in Truman history.
Ochs used the momentum of gaining a 7-6 first set win to take the second 6-2 while Russell won 6-3, 6-2 and Dagmar Velez picked up a 6-4, 6-1 win at number four.
The men's top doubles team of Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley took an 8-3 win to start the dual but the other two matches fell to the Hawks by the narrowest of margins. Adam King and Kirk Schlueter lost 9-8 at number two and Mike Merchant and Joe Murphy-Baum fell 9-7 at number three.
McCollough won his singles match at number one by a 7-6, 6-1 score while King and Murphy-Baum picked up straight set wins at number three and six respectively.
Schlueter lost a tough 7-6, 7-5 match to Lane Luhring at number four while Merchant won his second set 6-4 but went scoreless in the tie-break falling 6-0 which decided the match.
The men are 5-10 overall and will host McKendree University on Friday in their home finale while the women are 7-7 and will play their final match at home on Sunday against Fort Hays State.

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman women's tennis team took a 6-3 win and the men won 5-4 in non-conference action on Tuesday against Missouri Valley College. The teams will head to Quincy University on Wednesday.
Kelsey Kuykendall and Dagmar Velez picked up a doubles win as did Maggie Schutte and Lauren Higgins to put Truman up 2-1 heading into singles.
Kuykendall continued her hot streak with a straight set winner at number one while Ellen Russell, Schutte and Jennifer Hawkins picked up the other singles wins for the Bulldogs. The two wins by the Vikings were both won in three sets.
Like the women, Truman's third doubles teams picked up the only point for the men as Mike Merchant and Joe Murphy-Baum won 8-3.
Eric McCollough was a three-set winner at number one singles and King and Schlueter followed with straight set wins to tie the dual at four apiece.
It came down to the final match on the court as Murphy-Baum was taken to three sets before finally prevailing (6-2, 4-6, 6-2).
The Bulldogs will face Quincy (Ill.) on Wednesday before ending the home slate with a men's match against McKendree (Ill.) on Friday and a women's conference match with Fort Hays State on Sunday.
