ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - - The Truman softball team dropped a pair of close games in a makeup doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, falling at Missouri Western, 4-1 and 4-3. Kelsey Bollman had four total hits, and Bridget Schade clubbed her fifth homerun of the season.
The Bulldogs (20-18, 4-8 MIAA) fell behind 1-0 in the first game before coming across with a run in the top of the fourth when Schade (Herculanium, Mo., Jefferson College) left the ballpark down the left field line. However, the Griffons (29-8, 9-1 MIAA) scored two in their half to answer and added an insurance run in the sixth off Truman starter Ashley Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill., Shepard) to get the win.
Missouri Western got out to the lead again in game two, scoring twice in the bottom of the first. However, Truman rallied to take the lead with a run in the third and two more in the fourth. Alex Weber (Manhattan, Ill., Lincoln-Way Central High School) stole home as part of a double steal with Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa, Maquoketa) to get the 'Dogs on the board before Christine Ulses (St. Peters, Mo., Francis Howell Central) scored Corey Niblett (Troy, Mo., Troy Buchanan) on a sacrifice fly. Katie Pitts (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias High School) followed with an RBI single to give Truman the 3-2 edge.
The Griffons got an unearned run in their half of the fifth to tie the score at three before getting a walkoff single with two outs in the seventh to pick up the victory. Schade had a pair of hits as part of a seven hit Bulldog attack, while Mary Manley (Des Peres, Mo., Kirkwood ) roped her 15th double of the year. Elizabeth Grover (Troy, Mo., Troy Buchanan) started and lasted 4.2 innings before giving way to Beth Schnurbusch (Cape Girardeau, Mo., Quincy University (Ill.)), who threw the final two innings.
Truman returns to action next weekend with a pair of home doubleheaders, starting with Northwest Missouri at 3:00 pm on Friday before welcoming Nebraska-Omaha at noon on Saturday.
