Both Tennis Teams Eliminated For Conference Tournament

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Truman women's tennis team lost in the MIAA quarterfinals to Southwest Baptist University by a 5-1 score and there season comes to an end with an 8-8 record.

Amy Ochs and Ellen Russell picked up a hard fought 9-7 number one doubles victory for the Bulldogs as the only point for the team over Faiga Schmidt and Adrienne Kovacs.

The Bearcats would take number two doubles 8-2 and three doubles by an 8-6 score.

Needing just three wins in singles, SBU picked up straight set wins at number one as Kelsey Kuykendall ended her Truman career failing 6-0, 6-0 to Mehak Singh.  Kuykendall finishes with 86 singles wins, the third most in program history.

Dagmar Velez lost 6-1, 6-1 at number four singles and Schmidt ended the match with a three-set victory over Russell (4-6, 6-2, 6-1). Amy Ochs' match at number two was left unfinished tied at two sets apiece but trailing 5-2 in the tie break.

The MIAA All-Conference teams will be released in a few weeks.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Truman men's tennis team was defeated in their opening round match in the MIAA Championships by Washburn University 5-1. The Bulldogs consolation match was canceled as the tournament moved inside and court availability prohibited extra matches.

The Bulldogs lone win during the match came at number three doubles as Mike Merchant and Joe Murphy-Baum picked up an 8-5 win over Samir Haikal and Tyler Nelson. The other two doubles wiet the Ichabods way by scores of 8-6 and 8-4.

Washburn won three singles matches in straight sets to wrap up their victory while Truman was ahead in two matches left unfinished. Merchant won his first set 6-3 but was tied at four apiece and Murphy-Baum was a 6-2 first set winner and up a break at 2-0 when the match was determined and called off the court.

The Bulldogs are now 5-11 and will play their season finale on Friday at 9:00 a.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Both Truman Tennis teams will be the number sixth seed in the upcoming MIAA Tennis Championships tournament that begins on Thursday at the Plaza Tennis Center in downtown Kansas City. The men will face Washburn at 1:00 p.m. while the women will face Southwest Baptist at 3:00 p.m.

The men enter the tournament with a 5-10 overall record and were winless in their five conference matches this season, including an 8-1 loss to Washburn in Topeka on April 9th. In that match, the Ichabods escaped with wins all three wins in doubles action with two of the matches decided by a 9-7 score and a 9-8 (13-11) final. Freshman Joe Murphy-Baum picked up the lone point for the 'Dogs with a straight set winner over Tyler Nelson at number six singles.

The winner of the match will move on to face second seed Southwest Baptist University at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the tournament semi-finals while the loser will play the loser of the other quarterfinal match between #4 Nebraska-Omaha and #5 Emporia State.

The women are 7-7 and finished the conference with a 3-5 record as they head to Kansas City. Truman has won their last three dual matches including their regular season finale over Fort Hays State by a 9-0 tally.  Back on April 2nd, the Bulldogs lost 9-0 to the Bearcats in Bolivar with two of the singles matches decided in three sets.

The winner of the women's first round match will face the winner of the #2 Emporia State against #7 Fort Hays State match at 3:00 p.m. on Friday. The losers of those matches will play in the consolation match at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.
