KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - The Truman softball team was handed a pair of three-run losses at home on Thursday afternoon in late season action, falling 3-0 and 6-3 to Missouri Southern.
It took to the sixth inning of the opener for the Bulldog (20-22, 4-12 MIAA) to come alive against MSSU starter Nicole Reed, as the Southern pitcher twirled a no-hitter through the first five-plus innings. Senior Alex Weber (Manhattan, Ill., Lincoln-Way Central High School) broke through with a single to third base in the sixth, but the 'Dogs couldn't put any sustained rallies in defense of starting junior Ashley Rotkvich (Crestwood, Ill., Shepard), who went the distance and gave up three earned runs.
Game two got off to a better start, as freshman Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa, Maquoketa) delivered her team-best seventh homerun of the season to lead off the bottom of the first inning against Reed, who took the circle for game two as well. The teams see-sawed early on, with the Lions holding a 3-2 lead through the first four innings after Meredith Kusky (Ballwin, Mo., Nerinx Hall) added an RBI fielder's choice to score Bridget Schade (Herculaneum, Mo., Herculaneum). However, the Lions broke it open in the fifth with three more runs, and Truman didn't score again until the seventh when Katie Pitts (Jefferson City, Mo., Helias High School) hammered an RBI single to score Weber early in the frame. The Lions induced a double play ball to end it though, handing starter Beth Schnurbusch (Cape Girardeau, Mo., Notre Dame) the loss with Elizabeth Grover (Troy, Mo., Troy Buchanan) entering in relief.
Bollman and Pitts had three hits apiece at the top of the lineup, as the Bulldogs recorded nine hits in the nightcap.
Truman hits the road this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders in Kansas, starting on Saturday afternoon at Fort Hays (Kan.) State.
