JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Truman baseball team fell behind early, battled back but gave up late runs in a doubleheader sweep by the Lincoln Blue Tigers in an MIAA twinbill on Tuesday by scores of 10-6 and 11-5. The Bulldogs will play a four-game series that was switched to Friday/Saturday doubleheaders this weekend at home against Fort Hays State.
Adam Rush hit home runs to left and right field in the first two innings of game one, the later being a three-run shot as Lincoln built up a 5-0 lead on Truman senior pitcher Michael Staihr. The Bulldogs would rally with six of their own in the fourth inning with two runs scoring on a single by Luke Crader and two more coming off the bat of Tim Lee's first collegiate home run.
Matthew Grosch relieved Staihr in the third and retired the Blue Tigers in order but a lead off walk in the bottom of the fourth was followed later in the frame by three straight singles to plate four runners to put Lincoln up 9-6. They would tack on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to take the opener 10-6.
Lincoln had four extra base hits in the first two innings of the night cap to take a 4-1 lead but Truman whittled back with a sac fly run by Kenny Swanson in the third and tied it with two in the fourth. Jordan Howe belted a home run to lead off the inning and Michael Reese would later score on a sac fly by Devon Myers.
However, Tyler Stefan, pitching on two days rest, gave up five straight singles in the bottom of the inning and allowed four runs as the Blue Tigers doubled up the Bulldogs 8-4. Myers would hit a solo home run in the sixth but Lincoln would get a two-run shot of their own from Cedric Belt in the bottom of the sixth and added one more in the eight for the 11-5 win.
Lee was 3-of-6 in the doubleheader with three runs batted in while Myers was 3-of-7 with two RBIs. However, Lincoln hit .406 as a team during the double dip with James Johndrow scoring three times while connecting for hits on four of five at bats and Rush going 6-of-9 with eight RBIs. Darren Lasley and Ian Fuemmeler were the winning pitchers for the Blue Tigers.
The two teams will play the wrap around of their four-game series next Tuesday with a doubleheader in Kirksville. Before that, Truman will face Fort Hays State in a four-game slate that will begin on Friday with a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and a Saturday twinbill also starting at one. The series scheduled was altered due to projected weather on Sunday in Kirksville.
