Women Pull Out Thrilling 5-4 Win Against UMSL On Sunday

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Returning home after a two-day conference stretch, the Truman Tennis teams stepped outside of conference play and hosted Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday. The women came away with a 5-4 victory while the men fell 7-2 to the Tritons. The teams will be back in action at home on Tuesday against Missouri Valley College.

All three women's doubles matches came down to the wire with the Tritons taking number one 8-6 over Amy Ochs and Ellen Russell while the other two matches went Truman's way. Kelsey Kuykendall and Dagmar Velez won 9-8 and Maggie Schutte and Lauren Higgins picked up a big 9-7 victory to give Truman the advantage heading into singles.

Kuykendall took number on singles 6-3, 6-4 and Russell needed three sets to take number three (6-7; 7-6, 6-2). Jennifer Hawkins rallied from a set down at number six to pull out a three-set victory which in turn tipped the dual in favor of the Bulldogs. Hawkins won 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.

The men lost all three of their doubles matches with Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley falling 9-8 at number one to UMSL's duo of Tim Bryant and Daniel Anthony.

In singles play, Mike Merchant and number five and Joe Murphy-Baum at number six grabbed the only Truman points with each needed a third set-tie break for the winner. Merchant won 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 while Murphy-Baum won 2-6, 6-4, 10-4.

Both teams will be in action on Tuesday at home against Missouri Valley.  It will be the final home match for the men while the women will still host a make-up against Fort Hays State next Sunday.

TOPEKA, Kan. – Both Truman Tennis teams came up empty on their two match swing through Kansas over the weekend. The women lost 6-3 while the men were defeated 8-1 by Washburn University in conference action. The teams will be back in Kirksville on Sunday for a 9:00 a.m. match with the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Kelsey Kuykendall moved up to the number one singles match and got the same result as she won in straight sets over Morgan Rainey 6-3, 6-3.  Amy Ochs came back to win sets two and three for a win at number two and Ellen Russell won 6-4, 6-0 to take the third singles match.  However the Lady Blues swept the three doubles matches and picked up singles wins in the fourth, fifth and sixth matches to move to 5-1 in the MIAA while the Bulldogs fall to 2-5.

The men got their only win on Saturday from Joe Murphy-Baum at number six singles. Murphy-Baum won 6-1, 6-2 over Tyler Nelson.

The Bulldogs lost out on two big doubles matches to start the dual. Eric McCollough and Mark Sturley lost a heartbreaking 9-8 (13-11) match at number one while Adam King and Kirk Schlueter fell 9-7 at number two.

The loss drops the men to 4-8 overall and 0-5 in the MIAA.  Washburn evens their overall mark to 7-7 and 3-2 in the conference.

 

 



Friday's Recap

EMPORIA, Kan. – It came down to the final match as the Emporia State men edged out the Truman men's tennis team 5-4 in conference play on Friday afternoon. The women fell 7-2 to the Lady Hornets as both teams will face Washburn on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. in Topeka.

With the dual tied at four wins apiece, attention was turned to the men's number five singles match between Joe Murphy-Baum and Emporia's Nathan Wehrman. Murphy-Baum took the first set 6-4 but Wehrman rallied to take the second 6-3 and force a third-set tie-break. In the extra set, Wehrman took the match and the dual for Emporia with a 6-2 win.

Eric McCollough and Adam King picked up singles win for the Bulldogs while McCollough and Mark Sturley won 8-5 in the number one doubles match.

The men fall to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference while ESU improves to 6-5 and 1-3 in the MIAA.

Kelsey Kuykendall improved to 5-1 in conference singles play as she won at number three singles 6-0, 6-2 as she picked up one of the two women's points in their dual with the Lady Hornets.

Kuykendall sits at 17-5 this season and 8-2 in dual matches this year.

Dagmar Velez won was the other winner for the Bulldogs as she got the win after ESU's Alex Crowe retired in the second set.

The Lady Hornets move to 9-1 and 6-1 in the conference while Truman drops to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the league.
