Game 1 Box Score (ESU 7-0)
Game 2 Box Score (ESU 2-1)
KIRKSVILLE - - Katie Pitts and Laura Miller recorded three hits apiece during Saturday's softball doubleheader against nationally-ranked Emporia State, but the Hornets used a big inning in game one before narrowly holding off the Bulldogs in game two to pick up a sweep at Bulldog Park. ESU won by scores of 7-0 and 2-1.
The 18th-ranked Hornets (30-7, 11-1 MIAA) used a five-run fourth inning and stood firm behind a 13-strikeout performance on the mound by Karley Schmelzer to shut out the Bulldogs, 7-0. Truman left seven runners on base with six different players recording hits but couldn't break through with the big one to push runs across.
Then, in game two, Elizabeth Grover gave up two runs in the top of the first but was nearly lights-out the rest of the way to give the Bulldogs (18-16, 4-6 MIAA) a chance to split with ESU. Truman did its part to get runners on via eight hits and a pair of Hornet errors, but outside of an RBI single by Ashley Rotkvich in the bottom of the third inning, the 'Dogs again couldn't tally the equalizer, falling 2-1.
Miller hit a leadoff double in game two to help fuel her three-hit afternoon, while Pitts added a pair of singles from the No. 7 spot in the late game.
Truman returns to action this Tuesday afternoon in a nonconference road tilt with Illinois-Springfield. The doubleheader at UIS will begin at 3:00 pm.
