TOPEKA, Kan. - - A last at-bat victory in game one and a late rally in game two undid the Truman softball team on Sunday afternoon in its final road action of the season, as the Bulldogs lost 4-3 and 7-4 at Washburn University.
With the pair of losses, the Bulldogs (20-26, 4-16 MIAA) were officially eliminated from this season's MIAA tournament. The team will still makeup a previously-rained out doubleheader against Nebraska-Omaha on Monday (May 3) afternoon, starting at 1:00 pm at Bulldog Park.
Truman took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game one when Alyssa Perry (Independence, Mo., Fort Osage) drove home Bridget Schade (Herculaneum, Mo., Herculaneum) with an RBI single, but Washburn recovered with two in the bottom half to take a 2-1 edge. After the Lady Blues pushed the lead to 3-1, Trurman tied it in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs. Kelsey Bollman (Maquoketa, Iowa, Maquoketa) led off the inning with a single and later scored on Mary Manley's RBI single. Two batters later, Manley (Des Peres, Mo., Kirkwood ) touched home on Christine Ulses' RBI single, but the Bulldogs left two on base and headed to the sixth inning tied at three apiece. Washburn then closed the game in walk-off fashion, getting an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the 4-3 win.
The Bulldogs then got out quickly in game two, scoring a pair in the top of the first on a Manley sacrifice fly and an Ulses (St. Peters, Mo., Francis Howell Central) RBI double. Following a WU run in the second, Truman scored two more in the fourth to build a 4-1 edge behind a two-run blast by Perry. But the Lady Blues took advantage of a Truman error in the fifth to score four runs and take the lead, then added two insurance runs in the sixth for the 7-4 victory.
Manley, Ulses, Perry and Laura Miller (Columbia, Mo., Hickman) each recorded a multi-hit game in the doubleheader.
