Hayes, Shoemaker Score for Bulldogs in Loss

Box Score

SAN ANTONIO - - In a second consecutive fast-paced match on its Texas trip, the Truman women's soccer team got goals by Olivia Hayes and Trisha Shoemaker but fell, 4-2, to No. 24 Abilene Christian (Texas) on Sunday afternoon at the University of Incarnate Word.

The two teams combined for 35 shots, 23 on goal, and put six balls in the back of the nets in a battle of South Central region teams. ACU (4-0) took a 2-0 lead into the break, but early second half pressure by the Bulldogs (1-2-1) paid off in the 61st minute when Hayes finished the back end of a Kelsey Twellman feed with a one-timer to slice the lead in half.

The Wildcats scored less than two minutes later to regain a two-goal margin, but Truman wouldn't go away, fighting back to cut the deficit to one behind a Shoemaker header finish in the 67th. However, ACU would score once more and hold on in the final 20 minutes of action.

Hayes and Shoemaker have now found pay-dirt twice this season to lead the team, while Twellman tacked on her second assist, which also ties for the team-high.

Truman returns to Kirksville for its home opener this Thursday afternoon against Northwest Missouri State. Kickoff is set for 4:00 pm from the Truman Soccer Park.
