BOLIVAR, Mo. - - For the second straight match, the Truman women's soccer team came through in the clutch, this time getting a goal by Olivia Hayes in the second overtime to hold off Southwest Baptist, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon.
Hayes scored her third goal of the season with just 2:08 to play in the second overtime to give Truman (3-3-2) the victory at SBU (1-6-1). The Bulldogs opened up scoring just 39 seconds into the game, when Trisha Shoemaker notched her team-leading fourth goal of the year to give Truman a quick 1-0 lead. Hayes fed the sophomore from 15-yards out.
After Kelly Isaac scored to equalize the match at one apiece in the 16th minute, the Bulldogs retook the lead in the 59th minute when Melanie Hunt scored the first goal of her career off an assist by Megan Buri. However, just 1:31 later, Isaac scored again, finishing a deflection off an Amanda White pass to even the game again.
The squads went to OT, and after a relatively quiet first session, Hayes completed a Hunt pass to finish the game and send the Bulldogs home winners. Truman blasted SBU's defense all day, peppering 35 shots (18 on goal) while holding the Bearcats to just nine total shots (four on goal).
Senior Jayne Grisham earned the win in net, stopping two shots in her 107 minutes of work.
The Bulldogs return to action with a tough test on Tuesday night, stepping out of conference play to head to No. 3 Quincy (Ill.) for a 7:30 pm start.
