Weekend At-a-Glance:

The Truman women's soccer team heads to the Lone Star state's historic San Antonio this weekend for a pair of key regional matches, beginning with host Incarnate Word on Friday night at 6:00 pm before facing Abilene Christian on Sunday morning at 11:00 am.

Truman is coming off a 1-1 weekend at the Nebraska-Omaha Invite, where the team dropped a 2-1 decision in the season-opener against Midwestern State before rebounding with a 2-1 victory against Central Oklahoma in the finale. Seniors Jaclyn Schumann and Megan Buri, along with junior Olivia Hayes, scored goals for the 'Dogs.

This weekend marks nonconference matches numbers three and four on the season for the Bulldogs, who will start action against MIAA opponents next week.

Canine Corner:

The Bulldogs walked away from last weekend's Nebraska-Omaha Invite with a 1-1 record, dropping its opener against Midwestern State before grabbing the second game on Sunday against Central Oklahoma. Senior Jaclyn Schumann converted a penalty kick – Truman's first since the 2009 season – to get the Bulldogs on the board against MSU, before junior Olivia Hayes and senior Megan Buri scored just three minutes apart midway through the first half against UCO.

Truman outshot its opponents, 33-29, for the weekend, led by nine off the foot of Hayes. Senior Jayne Grisham spent 135 of the 180 total minutes in net, getting credited with the decision in both games, while sophomore Emily Bozdeck played the second half against UCO. The tandem combined for a 1.50 GAA and 11 saves.

Scouting the Cardinals:

Sitting at 1-0 after a season-opening 4-0 win against fellow-MIAA school Washburn, the Incarnate Word Cardinals welcome Truman to Benson Stadium on Friday night for a 6:00 pm kickoff. UIW was picked to finish fourth in the Lone Star Conference this season and fell in the first round of the LSC tournament to wrap up its 2010 campaign.

The Cardinals put in a pair of goals per half against Washburn, getting two from sophomore Amber Guenther and a goal/assist from freshman Jasma Latu. Senior Tori Puentes stopped all five Lady Blues shots on goal.

Truman and UIW have met just once, in 2007, with the Bulldogs winning a 4-0 game in Austin, Texas.

Scouting the Wildcats:

After reaching the NCAA tournament and capturing the Lone Star Conference championship in 2010, the ACU Wildcats have jumped out to a 2-0 mark in 2011 behind Labor Day weekend victories against Dallas Baptist and Texas A&M-International. Currently ranked No. 24 in the nation, ACU will meet Truman at Incarnate Word on Sunday after traveling to Central Oklahoma on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats were 13-1 away from Abilene last season in road and neutral site matches.

Junior Krysta Grimm and preseason LSC Offensive Player of the Year pick sophomore Andrea Carpenter have each scored twice already this season for a Wildcat team pegged to finish second in the LSC behind Midwestern State. Three players have already seen time in goal for ACU, with the trio combining for 180 minutes of 0.49 goals-against average soccer.

The Bulldogs and Wildcats have never met.

Bulldogs vs. UIW/ACU:

-       No current Bulldog has ever faced UIW or ACU.

Hayes Close to Cracking Top-Ten:

Junior forward Olivia Hayes is just one goal away from Truman's all-time top-ten, as the 5-foot-4 Clayton, Mo.-native has put in 19 goals in her two-plus seasons in the purple and white. She's currently chasing assistant coach Katie Reuck's three-year total of 20, set from 2007-2009. Riley Mahn (21; 2006-09) and Jill Benson (22; 1994-97) sit in ninth and eighth places on the career goal scoring list.

Let's Just Call it Even:

Truman tied a program-high with five draws in 2010, including four coming in true road matches. The Bulldogs last had five draws in the 1996 season and have not had a draw-less season since 2001.

Put it in Neutral:

Since 2000, the Bulldogs are 18-8 in neutral-site matches, including a 1-1 mark both last season and already in 2011.

Truman Picked Second in MIAA Poll:

Truman women's soccer picked up one first-place vote and placed second in the 2011 MIAA Preseason Coaches Poll, announced Thursday, Aug. 4 by the league office.

The Bulldogs totaled 57 points in the nine-team poll, earning one first-place and seven second-place votes. Last season's conference champion Central Missouri was picked to repeat, collecting the other eight first-place votes for 64 total points, while Southwest Baptist (46), Missouri Southern (43) and Washburn (38) rounded out the top five. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team, as Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Emporia State and first-year program Fort Hays State wrapped up the poll.

Nine of the league's 11 schools participate in women's soccer, with only Pittsburg (Kan.) State and Lincoln (Mo.) not fielding teams.

Up Next:

The Bulldogs return to Kirksville for their first home match of the season against Northwest Missouri, next Thursday, Sept. 15, at 4:00 pm. From there, they will travel to No. 8 Central Missouri for a 7:00 pm showdown on Saturday, Sept. 17.
