Lions Sneak Away with Late Goal

Box Score | Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - A Lindenwood goal in the 86th minute broke a 2-2 tie and propelled the Lions past the Truman men's soccer team 3-2 on Friday afternoon in an MIAA matchup between a pair of top programs.

The Bulldogs (8-5-1, 5-2-1 MIAA) carried a 2-1 lead after a frantic first 12 minutes of action, as Nick Franta (Ballwin, Mo., Parkway West) got things going in the 9th minute with a goal off a feed from Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South). However, just 19 seconds later, LWU (9-2-3, 6-0-2 MIAA) returned the favor, as Brett Humes' shot was denied by Truman keeper Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette), but Andre Hayne was there for the putback to knot the game at one apiece.

Less than four minutes later, at the 12:01 mark of the match, Charlie Backus (St. Louis, Mo., CBC) found pay-dirt, converting a second Chapman assist into a goal for the 'Dogs and a 2-1 lead.

From there, the game began to get chippy on a wet, overcast day in Kirksville, as the squads fought their way to 44 fouls (22 each) and five yellow cards. Lindenwood evened the score in the 55th minute when Alfredo Paez buried a shot from the top of the box, before Azeem Razwan gave the Lions the game-winner in the 86th minute.

Lindenwood out-shot Truman by a 14-12 count, with the Bulldogs earning five corners to the Lions' four. Backus' four shots led Truman, with Chapman taking three of his own.

The Bulldogs return to action on Sunday, celebrating Senior Day, with a 2pm start against Southwest Baptist. The Bearcats defeated Upper Iowa 4-1 on Friday in Fayette, Iowa, and will carry a 3-10-1 (1-6-1 MIAA) record into Sunday's contest.
