KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman wrestling team posted a 1-2 record in the MIAA Duals on Sunday in Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs lost to nationally-ranked Fort Hays State (Kan.) 31-12, Lindenwood (Mo.) 47-12 but picked up a big win over Central Missouri 33-20. The Bulldogs are now off until the NCAA Division II Super Regional February 24 in Edmond, Okla.
The featured match of the day lived up to the billing as a pair of nationally-ranked combatants at 149-pounds dazzled the Pershing Arena crowd. Truman's
Ryan Maus, sixth in Division II battled Fort Hays' Mitchell Means, #2 in Division II in an epic bout.
Trailing 4-2 late, Maus got a takedown to even the match sending it to extra time. In the first extra period, Means scored a takedown but Maus was able to get a two-point reversal as time expired to send it into the second overtime session.
Maus could not escape in the first 30 seconds but did get a near fall when he was on top in the second 30 second period and came away with the 9-6 victory. It was the 20
th win this season for the sophomore while Means' took the loss for only the third time this year.
Alex Maus lost a 3-2 contest to Fort Hays' CJ Napier (ranked sixth in Division II) and
Devon Fenstermaker was edged out 3-1 by Derek Koehn at 157.
Helmut Rentschler picked up Truman's other win against Fort Hays with a 7-2 decision over Aaron Berscheidt.
In round two, Lindenwood used six, first period pins to down the Bulldogs 47-12. Rentschler and
Warren Galloway got Truman's lone points in walkovers.
The two original MIAA members took to the mat in round three as Central Missouri and Truman squared off. The Mules struck first as Ty Balty surprised
Tyler Schilson with a pin with under a minute to go in the match. Truman then had three straight walkovers to take an 18-6 lead.
Fenstermaker wore down Russell Naylor for a 4-0 decision at 157 before Central scored the next 14 match points to pull within one. The key match in that stretch was a third period pin by Derek Sanders on Rentschler.
Central would have to forfeit the final two matches as
Zach Hayes and
Thomas Redmon were awarded wins to give Truman the 33-20 win.
The Bulldogs finish the regular season with a 3-12 dual mark.
